Is this a copyright protection issue?

Hey guys.

Today I copied 2 dual layer DVD’s in a row with no problems, the 3rd one I tried seemed to burn fine, but when I put it in my DVD players all it does is make grinding and whirring sounds and doesn’t read, I tried to burn it again and the same thing happened.
I’m thinking as I had just burned successfully 2 DL DVD’s it might have something to do with copyright protection as the DVD only came out 2 months ago.

I burned all 3 DL DVD’s by saving them to to my hard drive using “DVD Fab Decrypter 3”.
I then used Nero 6 (something), opened the files on my hard drive in Nero Express with the DVD-Video files selection, loaded them in and burned.

It worked for the first 2 DVD’s. The 3rd I tried (twice) doesn’t read, like I said, it just grinds around in my players.

I don’t know much at all about this stuff, especially copyright protection and how to get past it, so below are some details I found on the 3 DVD’s I had success and failure with, the first 2 are the ones I had success with, the 3rd one is the one that I tried to burn twice which just grinds in my player.

Does anything there tell anyone what changes I can make to successfully burn it, is there any more info I can tell you that will be any help ?

Thanks !

Oh - I used Verbatim DVD+R DL each time.

#3

It is indeed Copy Protected and thus cannot be copied directly.

#4

Assuming by you saying that you used DVD Fab Decrypter 3. You mean that you used the Ver 3.0.5.2 Beta of DvD Fab Decrypter.

You stated that you are trying to copy DvD’s that are no more than a couple month old. Two were a good and one your having problems with.

You are using a beta version, meaning that it’s not a 100% complete. It’s possible that the beta version might have issues. Try rolling back to a stable version and see what you results are. Keep your log if there is an issue with new copy protection then you can send the log to DvD Fab so they can address the issue.

Other combo’s that you could try are

AnyDvD with DvD Shrink or DvD Decrypter
RipIt4Me with DvD Shrink or DvD Decrypter

Hi jc836, when you say it is indeed copy protected and can not be copied directly are you saying that saving it to my hard drive with “DVDFab Decrypter 3 - 3055” is the problem ?
So how do you suggest I fix it ?

And platinumsword, I guess I just answered your question, I’m using “DVDFab Decrypter 3 - 3055”

OK the first commercial DVD that copied properly was in PAL format (I live in Australia and that is the standard format), the second DVD I copied also worked and was NTSC but it was a DVD+R DL I copied.
The DVD that has failed twice to burn is a COMMERCIAL-NTSC DVD, could this have something to do with the problem ?, we use PAL in Australia.

#6

As noted in the above post, you may be using a program that is not fully developed. Can you save to your hard drive-sure. This assumes you have the correct decryption software and that it can handle the format (NTSC or PAL). Sorry I cannot be of further help on this.

I actually have a bigger problem.

I have a post here from 3 days ago where I posted to ask why my burner has wasted the last 15 dual layer discs I have tried to burn.

Yesterday I changed some things around like setting all my Nero folders to Drive D instead of drive C, as I have a lot more space on D.

It seemed to work as after that I burned 2 DVD’s in a row successfully.

As you know from this thread I have failed burning a 3rd DVD, I thought it must have been a copyright protection issue as my last 2 burns with different DVD’s were successful.

I just tried to copy again one of the DVD’s I successfully copied yesterday and it failed, I got the same result as I did for a lot of the past 15 failed burns, everything seems to copy fine, it gets through the burn process and finishes, but when I try to play it in my DVD players it just grinds around and won’t read…

Any ideas as to what this could be.
My burner is burning loads of single layer DVD’s and CD’s without a single problem…

Follow these steps:

  1. Visit your burner’s website, and update your firmware to the latest version.

  2. Change the booktype of your blank media to dvd-rom before burning (bitsetting options). If your burner doesn’t provide software to do this, use Nero cd-dvd speed: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/

  3. Use Anydvd and Clonecd with Verbatim +R DL media to preserve the original layer break position. Clonedvd2, Shrink, and Nero Recode will not preserve the original layer break position. There is no need to be ripping to the hard drive first before using Clonecd, provided you’re running Anydvd on your toolbar. Just put the original disc in your reader, and put the Verbatim +R DL blank in your burner. Click a few times–and done.

Fully working trial versions of Anydvd and Clonecd can be found here:

http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html

  1. With Anydvd running on your toolbar, run Clonecd and click a few times. If you want, you can even burn on the fly with Clonecd
(but I don’t really recommend burning on the fly, unless you really know what you’re doing).

  2. Problem solved (unless there’s an issue with your hardware, drivers, or OS)

This method is not free, but it is faster and easier than using Ripit4me + Imgburn (which will also preserve the original layer break position). This is the freeware solution.

Hi,
My firmware is up to date and the booktype is set to DVD-ROM.
I downloaded the version of AnyDVD that you suggested a few weeks ago when I was getting all of the 15 DL failed burns, but I ran out of blanks and needed a rest from this probem, so now the 21 trial has expired so I can’t use it…
If I pay to use it how long does that give you access for ?
And I thought AnyDVD was only used to crack copyright protection ? (my problem doesn’t seem to be a copyright protection issue as some of the DVD burns I have had fail were of DVD+R DL movies, which obviously had no copyright protection on them).
Thanks

#10

I’m pretty sure AnyDVD helped me make a successful DVD DL copy when I used a trial version 2 versions ago (back in September) !

For some reason I feel the latest trial version didn’t help me as I think I was using it when I got some of the 15 coasters, but maybe I’m wrong, I can’t remember exactly, I’ve tried many different methods of burning lately ! ? ! ? !

Do you have any idea how I got 2 successful results yesterday straight after I made the changes I listed above ?

#11

Anydvd removes protection; it can’t cause burning errors.

If I pay to use it how long does that give you access for ?

Anydvd does a number of things; you listed one of them.

(my problem doesn’t seem to be a copyright protection issue as some of the DVD burns I have had fail were of DVD+R DL movies, which obviously had no copyright protection on them).

Most original commercial movies use two layers and have some form of protection, which Anydvd removes.

If you’re going to use Verbatim+R DL, then you should use Clonecd to burn when using Anydvd.

#12

Probably because dvdfab Decrypter can’t handle some of the newer protections that Anydvd in conjunction with Clonecd can.

I’ve never had any problems using Anydvd+Clonecd+Verbatim +R DL media.

Clonecd will not change the blank media’s booktype though, so you may need to do this before using Clonecd using the method I outlined previously. You use Clonecd to burn.

There is no need to be ripping to the hard drive first before using Clonecd, provided you’re running Anydvd on your toolbar. Just put the original disc in your reader, and put the Verbatim +R DL blank in your burner. Click a few times–and you’re done.

#13

Well considering I’m getting failed burns with original DVD movies from 2001 and also DVD+R DL’s I’m positive this isn’t a protection issue at all.

It seems like it’s relating directly to the layer break, it sounds promising you say AnyDVD and CloneCD properly burn the layer break but I’m not sure when I’ll be able to buy them.

Can you please point me towards some clear steps I can follow using RipIt4M and ImageBurn ?

Here is the ripit4me guide.

Hi Jeff.
Yesterday I actually tried following that 1 click mode you can see in the RipIt4Me guide in the link you gave above, I ended up deleteing all the programs as I kept getting -The rip seems to have been aborted RipIt4Me cannot continue- "ERROR! Unable to patch decrypter!"
I just downloaded all of the programs again and I’m getting the same error I got yesterday, do you know what it is ?

Hi Jeff and Webslinger,

I’ve taken advice from both of you and am trying the RipIt4Me method.

OK I’ve got RipIt4Me working, it didn’t want to use “DVDFab Decypter 3” which was the cause of the error message.

So I’ve run everything through the automatic mode following these steps :
http://www.ripit4me.org/guide.html

What do I do when it gets to the end and opens in DVD Shrink ?
It says it’s too big for the disc, it thinks I’m trying to put it on a single layer disc but I’m wanting to make a lossless copy onto a dual layer blank.

Do I ignore DVD shrink and open and burn it with ImageBurn?
Is there some guidelines I can follow where I can’t go wrong, I don’t know what settings to use and I’ve only got 2 blanks left, if they fail it will put me up to about 20 failed burns, I searched around today for DVD+R DL RW discs but couldn’t get any.

As above I went through the RipIt4Me process, then tried to burn it with ImgBurn.

It got to 99%-100% complete and I got the Error :
Close Track Failed - Power Calibration Error.

I used a TDK disc as that is all I had left, it was my last 1, that’s 20 wasted DL discs now.
I was getting the Power Calibration Error with Verbatim using certain methods also so I don’t think it was the TDK disc that made it fail in the last second of the burn, + if you read the first post of this thread out of the last 22 burns I’ve made 2 successful burns and one was on the TDK brand.

I think that’s it for me…

This seems like a natural point to close this thread, since there are two others on similar subjects and it is getting pretty confusing exactly what stage the progress is.
