I have had a few media devices and have found an HTPC is really the best option for my needs. Nowadays very powerful HTPCs can be built for cheap and with a very small form factor. The days of having a microATX case sitting in the TV room are over. I only got into the media players since having an HDTV. Before that I used DVD players with USB and memory card support. Maybe a wifi capable smart DVD player is a good, affordable option for the CRT TVs.
I have had a stick PC since the ones with a dual core processor hit the market. It has been great and is extremely portable. Plus, you can play h265 video on them with an Android media player app like BS Player. It won't be useful on the CRT TVs though.
The KDLINKS box is nice but at that price point it is competing with building a HTPC which would run circles around it.
One other thing to consider is using a router that allows a hard drive to connect to it. I have done this and all I need to stream movies anywhere in range is a media player (DVD/Blu Ray player, phone, stick PC, tablet etc.) with wi-fi capability. The good thing is there are a lot of option to choose from now.
