Is Smartburn Smart?

I got some HP x4 +R discs (Mitsubishi Chemical). Smartburn says it is 8x. I went ahead with 8x, and it burned through, but the last 20% of the disc was unreadable (PO around 100, vs 0.5 for the first 80%). I then tried 4x and the burn was successful.

Is smartburn smart? Or maybe the drive is subpar in terms of quality and cannot handle 8x reliably? (real 811S, HS0K)

LiteON changed the way the drive sets the maximum write speed from a built in database of media ID’s to asking the disc what it’s rated speed is. Your media is probably reporting itself as 8x, but since it is labeled 4x there is no guarantee 8x will work, as you found out.
Care to post the MID code here?
MCC 8x discs BTW are having serious issues. Check this thread out.

MCC-002 is not 8x media, and your drive should not be offering 8x. Would you by chance be using a modded firmware?

No, Just plain HS0K from LiteON website.

The drive is a 811s (Pacific Digital).

I first ran SmartBurn.exe and was told 8x.
Then with DVDShrink I chose max speed for recording and it did say 8x when recording started.

With mine it does a great job with those disk at 6x speed, try them at that. 8x is usually a bit too fast for good quality all the way to the end.
In fact I think it burns the MCC disk better with HSOE but they all
get a bit diferent burn after burn.
