Is it true that the Sony DW-U18A is really a SOH 812S?

Seems I got stimied with a DW-U18A instead of the SONY DRU530 that I ordered from diymicro.com. I was about to return it but maybe I should keep it if this rumor is true? Anyway to tell for sure? Wish LiteOn had a firmware upgrade for the 812…if it flashed then I would know for sure.
FYI- if it is true, you can pick one up right now for as little as $112 at newegg.com

The firmware on this DW-U18A is UYS1:

Can someone tell what their SOH 812S is? Nero will tell you in the recorder properties area.

Thanks for any help on this.

You can prove it to yourself by using LtnRPC to make the DW-U18A region free, and Liteon’s BookType tool might even work with the drive, I don’t know that for sure though.

It’s definately a 812s, if you extract the firmware and open it in a hex editor you’ll see…

That’s from my sony which is using the same firmware as yours

dropped my firmware.bin file (UYS1) into C++ 6.0 and sure enough it mentions sony but also is the lite info mentioned above in the same location. OK guess I’ll keep the drive
