I've had a 451S since around February, and have been keeping pace with all of the tweaky stuff here on cdfeaks. What's been bothering me is that in all this time of firmware upgrades, applying write strategies, and crossflashing to (now) an 832S, I have never had really good PI scans from Kprobe, and in some cases PO as well (I will be posting some examples when I get home, but I wanted to get the ball rolling while it was nagging at me).
When I say my Kprobes are not that good, it's in direct comparison to other people here with the same drive / crossflash / firmware version as me at that time, using the same media. My PIs typically average 400, with peaks up to 1100, even with the hallowed Ricoh JPNR01. In fact, the only media that I've had "very good" results with (while in 851S mode) is the older Memorex -RW, i.e. TDK502. That one is posted here
(I was in 832S mode when I Kprobed it, but it was burned while in 851S GSOC mode.)
So I have to assume it's possible for two burners of the exact same type, running the same firmware, to produce vastly different results with the same media. My question is twofold: why? And is there anything that can be done to make it better?
