They are not needed for anything. Some programmers are
too lazy to implement native 2K/SP SPTI method and prefer
to ask their users to install ASPI, but there's no technical
reason for that. Luckily, there are very few of them.

So called "Nero ASPI" is not a real ASPI layer : the DLL
is just a wrapper which converts ASPI calls into SPTI,
so you're actually using SPTI. Adaptec's ASPI comes with
a driver, and therefore is a real ASPI layer.
