how is this useless?!?! This serves for faster combo drives: The best of both worlds (CD’s and DVD’s) as you hit the top of the line CD speeds fo 52x and DVD top of the line speeds of 8x. The only thing that i found curious is that it DOESN’T support DVD-RW

Okay if you create your drives from the scratch it’s not useless for you. However most consumers wait till a manufacturer uses this laser driver in their products hence the sentence: While the product itself is useless to consumers it paves the way for new consumer electronics products that make use of this laser driver.

wow that is fast. The reason i have not brought a dvd writer yet is becus of there slow cdr writing speed

Rana, It does support all writing formats, reread. Quote from the press release DVD+R/W, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R/W, CD-R and CD-ROM. I’m sure it supports DVD -R given the fact that it supports DVD -RW, someone just made a typo and forgot to add a “/” like they have in the DVD +R/W. This is a good thing. Only problem with 8X DVD writing is that there currently are some playback issues they are having with media that can be written @ 8X. The other thing to remember is that all DVD burners are combo drives. Not a new concept.
