Intermittent recording refusal (On-demand) (Panasonic DMR EZ28K - DVD recorder)

It would say “Cannot record”  I was about to chuck the recorder out the window!  I reset the device, but it was too late to start recording.  Firmware update FTP site is gone. Has Panasonic done this intentionally to prevent modification (hacking) of firmware files, or to restrict consumer modifications & resulting damages?
