Intel cpu runs hot, fan/heatsink recommendations?

Hello,

I am running a P4, 2.8 cpu with 512meg of ram. I am getting a temp of 74C/165-170 f in the processor zone as shown when using Intel Active Monitor. I have applied new thermal compound(arctic silver), moved around cables making sure they aren't blocking too much and attached the case fans directly to the power supply unit which also is new.
The temperatures still remain the same. Regarding the fans I have 2 in the back and one on top. At this point it seems I should try a new fan/heatsink combo. Currently i am using the intel stock heatsink/fan which I believe is not the best thing out there.
Any recommendations as to what fan/heatsink I should look into or perhaps other things I could try to bring these temperatures down some?

does the reading of your temps in the bios under "PC health" match the temps reported by intel active monitor? the stock heatsink and fan that intel provides is usually more than sufficient unless the CPU is being overclocked.

I am running a 3Ghz with 1GB of ram with two fans drawing air in from the front and one fan drawing air out in the rear and my CPU temp is only about 118F

i hope that's the on-die load temp and not socket idle temp.

Thermaltake XP-90 is a GREAT heatsink. granted i have a completely different HW setup (cpu, case, etc.) but i hardly ever break 50C load temp.

Where do I get PC Health? I did a search but came up with PC powerscanonly. I have only checked the temp with Intel Active Monitor.

how do I tell the difference if it is on-die load temp and socket idle temp?

it all depends on which monitoring chip your motherboard is using to report the temps. you can download and run SpeedFan to see what monitoring chips your mobo has:
