Installing DVD Burner?

Hey guys, so I have a Dell Dimension 3100. I tried this on my other computer but all explain it once I’ve fixed this problem. So I have a DVD RAM drive and all it does is play movies and rewrite cd’s it can not burn on DVD’s. So I went out and bought a DVD Dual Layer + R - R burner. I do not know the model because it does not say it on the box or instructions it just says Retail plus + at the top, I guess thats the company. Anyways, I took out my old DVD drive, put in the new one, and tried the jumper on Slave and the first one. I forget what its called. But anyways both times that I did this when it found the new hardware it said it was a “CD drive” and when i got to my computer it says DVD ROM Drive. When I insert a blank dual layerDVD it reads it as a CD. Can anybody help me out? Thanks.

In shorter words, it reads my DVD Burner as a regular DVD Rom drive or CD Drive.
The company is Retail plus +, it came with a disk that has LG on it, but it just installs nero and such.
I also tried master, I’m on Master now and it also shows it as a DVD RAM (D:)

You might want to try switching it over to master.
I’m not too familiar with installing drives, but it could be the cable. Sometimes you need a different cable to hook up to the motherboard.

first check your connections and set the jumper to cable select.

i wouldnt worry too much about how my computer names the drive.

what programs do you have for cd/dvd burning? other than ner0 oem

So set the jumper to cable select? Okay all do it now, and all edit my post with the results of what happens when I insert a blank disk.

maybe the box doesnt name the drive but what about the label on the drive itself?

Okay so I put it into cable select, I then inserted the disk that came with the burner, and I installed everything so now I have nero. So you know the burner works because it read the disk and installed everything. i then put in a blank DL + R DVD and it read it as a blank disk, and it turned my DVD RAM Drive and now it says CD Drive.

As for model numbers I got this. HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20
thats exactly what it says under device manager.

have you actually tried to burn a single layer dvd yet?

again i wouldn’t worry at all about how my computer reads the drive.

I only have dual layer dvd’s. I looked at the dvd burner, mine doesn’t look like that. So Should I try to burn a DVD? I tested in Nero, when I put a dual it shows like 8 GB, and when I put a single it shows 4 GB, I’m positive that means it works :D.
I love you

pictures are not an indication of the actual burner.

when i stated “looks like its this drive” i meant your drive IS a LG GSA-H22N

Okay, well before I do that, I put a 4.7 GB disk in and dragged a few things over 2 GB, and clicked burn and it was writing and it got halfway, then I clicked abort though because I didn’t want to waste the disk. But since it was writing that means it works right?
