Hi Members,

I have installed a new H.D.
The rest of the components remain the same.
Using ITunes or Media Player, when I try to play a CD, the computer reads the tracks but no sound.
Screen pop up reads - ‘problem with sound device’

Motherboard is ASUS P4P800 / M370. Contains the audio.
Reloaded ASUS M.B. CD but still no sound.

If I reconnect old Hard Drive to computer I get sound.
Please advise what is the problem and how to fix ?

Regards

On what channel, port and device did you connect this harddrive to?

What operating system are we talking about ? also since you replace the old HDD I will assume the new HDD is now the main one containing the operating system, if you have MC(Media Center) installed you may need to setup your speakers…viva-> MC

Hi
Mr Belvedere : port, channel, device ?
I transferred the two leads connected to old Seagate Barracuda HD
to new Seagate Barracuda HD which is on the shelf below, in the tower.

StormJumper :
Loaded XP with Media Player 9.

When connected to new H.D
Windows opens but no sound. Media Player - ‘0xcooD11BA’.
No sound for ITunes - ‘no device connected’.

Click to Sound, Speech and Audio -
Default device : Modem #0 line playback
Midi Music playback : No midi playback
Volume : No audio device.

Reconnect leads to old HD :
Get opening Windows sound, can use Media Player / ITunes sound.

Click to ‘Sound Speech & Audio’ -
Default device: SoundMax Digital Audio
Midi Music playback : Default Device SoundMax
Volume: SoundMaxDigital Audio. Device Audio: Medium

Since audio is included in motherboard, I loaded motherboard CD but no change.

Any ideas ?

Some of the Asus boards have jumpers that enable or disable the on board sound, or let you hook up your external sound jacks to them for the front mounted headphone jacks and things like that.
If you pull the external jacks or jumpers off the speakers can be disabled.
I had it happen with my latest upgrade, didn’t have the external sound jack hooked up anymore and also didn’t have the jumpers put back so got no sound when I changed the boards around.
I doubt that’s your issue with nothing getting detected but just in case double check the jumpers if your board uses them.
Mine didn’t have a real clear picture or description of what they did or what was supposed to be jumpered so when I changed things I had forgotten about them so it didn’t work.

Hi Dartman,

For sound I use the speakers in my monitor screen.

These connections have not changed.

Any suggestions folks ?

Check your motherboard BIOS and make sure the sound is turned on there for the motherboard, I have the same motherboard but turned that sound off and use a PCI sound card (soundblaster) instead of the motherboard sound

Hi Jimbo,

Thanks your comment. As indicated in previous outline -

Both old and new hard drive are housed directly below each other in tower shelves

All contents in tower ( including ASUS motherboard ) connected via leads to the original 80 GB Barracuda Hard Drive -
Sound works. ie Windows chime when Windows opens, cds and ITunes work.
Close down.

I transfer the two cable connections going to old hard drive to the new 250 GB hard drive. The Mother Board bios have not been changed.
Restart / Windows opens.
No sound for any application.

Then I reloaded the original CD for ASUS HD. Still no sound !

Any suggestions folks ?

Are they IDE hard drives? If they are and on the same cable make sure one jumper is set for ‘master’ and one is set for ‘slave’. In the past i’ve had trouble when using ‘cable select’.

Hi Sikoone,

The original H.D. is 80 GB Seagate Barracuda. 5 years old.
New H.D. is 250 GB Seagate Barracuda. Both are SATA.
They are not run in parralel but currently housed in tower shelves.

I remove connections to old H.D. transfer the cables over to new H.D.
New H.D. is connected to all the original components - same M.B. audio, cd/dvd player etc and old H.D. is not connected to anything.

New H.D. and old H.D. are loaded with same MS Windows and ITunes.
Old H.D. I get sound. New H.D. I get no sound.
Screen reads - 'No device connected" Any Advice ?

Try using this audio driver http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOUND-CARD/Asus/Asus-P4C800-Deluxe-SoundMAX-Audio-Driver-512013630.shtml

Did you install the driver for the sound device?
