IMHO, the best is the Gradius modified Piodata 1.18 firmware for the DVR-108DX which can be obtained here:
http://gradius.rpc1.org/DVR-108D%20into%20DVR-108DX.zip
The package has the flasher, kernel, firmware and instructions so you have everything you need.
The EXTRA benefits of this cross-flash allows:
- Unlocked rip-speed for DVD unlike the standard Pioneer factory firmwares
- RPC-1 instead of RPC-2
- Bitsetting of DVD+R to DVD-ROM
Just use good media such as TY 4/8X or Verbatim 4/8X that this firmware was designed for and you’ll be fine
Don’t expect support for a lot of the the latest 16X media since the DVR-108 and is no longer supported by Pioneer any more. Otherwise there is always the choice to upgrade to a Pioneer DVR-111 or DVR-112 which will better support the current 16X media.
Alternatively, you can try the >NIL: firmware from his website:
http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/
There are two firmwares there, the 1.14 and the 1.18 both of which allow for:
- Unlocked rip-speed for DVD unlike the standard Pioneer factory firmwares
- RPC-1 instead of RPC-2
- User selectable burn speeds of up to 16X even for media that was not originally incorporated into the original factory firmware. However, just because it burns, it does not GUARANTEE that it will burn well due to different write strategies required for current 16X media.
But this option does not have the bitsetting of DVD+R unlike the Gradius/Piodata version. So you need to make your own choice
