Imation DVD-R not burning at 4x anymore (only at 8x!)

Hi all,

I got a LG GSA-4163B with A105, and after zillions of tests and coaster, i found out a good suplier with good medias, and those were IMATION DVD-R. They are original Imation, because the store purchases directly from Imation here at my country.

I have burned over 50 of these medias succesfully, never lost a single one and never got any kind of error when testing.

Last week, i purchased a few more blank Imation medias and NONE of them worked. Nero or DVD Decrypter pop up an error message right after LEAD IN start, and abort operation.

I tested over 15 medias, and same problem.

Today, just for the sake of it, i tried burning at 8x (i ALWAYS burn at lowest speed possible) and to my surprise, it worked like a charm!! It actually burned at 6X, but runned some tests afterwards and got no error on ScanDisk and Transfer Rate test.

So I ask: what could be the problem?? My drive or the medias changed something on manufacture process?? The ID CODE is exactly the same on all the old and new medias.
Also notice that my drive burned Maxwell, Nestar and other poor medias at 4x normally.

I would suggest using DVD Identifier to find out who actually makes the discs. It is likely not Imation. You can look them up and your drive on VideoHelp.com to see what experiences others have had with them. Taiyo Yudens are widely considered to be the best.

#3

Chances are you just bought a bad batch. Imation is buying media from Moser Baer (Made in India), CMC (Made in Taiwan) and TDK (Made in Grand Duchy of Luxembourg).

I got a 25 spindle of Made in Luxembourg DVD-R 8x discs last week, special offer, and they have TDK media code.

I would personally avoid Imation, Memorex, Intenso and a few other brands of this class because they’re buying media from different suppliers.

Only Verbatim, Hitachi Maxell and TDK for me

Made in India (MBI) Imation 8x burns excellently, at its rated speed, on my 4163B (A106).

Try getting some of those and burning at the rated speed. I see no reason to burn @ 4x on these discs with a 4163B.

As suggested, post the Media ID.

#5

Just to add to what Arachne says about rated speed.

Whilst burning slower may occassionally be the best for poor quality media , it really is a fallacy that burning slower than the rated speed is better. Some media do actually burn better at a higher speed, very few burning better at slower speeds.

The exception might be 16x media that many choose to burn at 12x.

#6

Is the MID really the same??

Even a slightly changed MID can make things different…

#7

:iagree: - Yep. For example, MBIPG101 R04 comes in two different flavours: MBIPG101 R04-01 and MBIPB101 R04-02. Just an example.

But whatever. If they burn fine @6X, then be it, no?

i ALWAYS burn at lowest speed possible
Why is that? You should always burn at the speed wich gives your the best results, and it is not necessarily the slowest speed. :disagree:

That’s maybe what you’re experiecing here: a small change in MID quality can lead to failed burns at speeds not entirely adapted to the MID. Just conjecture.

Also, it may be that updating your firmware to A106 could be a good idea?

Only if you want to, of course. It may or may not have an effect in this case.

Thanks to all the people who kindly replied to my post!!

I runned out of blank Imation disks, and right after i get more tomorrow i’ll post the media code info. But i can tell that the code is exactly the same as the previous medias i bought at the same store. They are FUJIFILM03.

One thing i noticed is even if i set Nero or DVDDecrypter to burn at 8x, the maximum speed it actually burns is 6x!!!

And of all the 10 medias i burned, that refused to burn at 4x but burned at 8x (actually, 6x…), NONE gave me any error on Scandisk or Transfer Rate test on Nero CD-DVD Speed.

I know i should look for verbatin, TY or other excellent medias, but the problem is, they are NOT sold here in my country, so i need to get the best of whats avaliable. So far, Imation and Maxell where the best avaliable, until Imation started this strange behaviour and Maxwell started to come as Ritek05.

Also, thaks for the tip on burning speed. I learned that CD burning should always be slower, so i did the same concerning DVD burning…

Also, i’ll try to upgrade my 4163B to A106. Just cant seem to find it anywhere here on this site!!

The ‘slower is better’ rule is not only wrong with most DVD media, it is also false with most CD media at this point as well. With modern burners, firmware, and media, DVD media typically gives best results at their rated speed (with exceptions, such as 16x generally best at 12x), and high speed CD media such as 40-52x media typically will burn its best from 16-40x.

If you can’t find it , PM me with your email address & I send it to you.

#12

Just wondering, does the pack say Made in India or Made in Taiwan on them?

http://ca.lgservice.com

Click on Device Driver->DVD-ROM(Writer)

Then scroll down the list to find the firmware for the 4163B. All the versions are grouped into one block and you can find A106 there.

EXACLTY the same as the ones i bought before, and accept burns at 4x.

Not sure about the previous ones, but these are made in INDIA. At least, thats what the spin label says.

Could them be fake?? I burned a few other brands, even low cost ones, on my LG 4167B and all burned OK at 4x. Still, this Imation ones refuse to!!!

#15

I don’t think they’re fake - they’re made by Moser Baer using FujiFilm technology. I have had a bad experience with them (dye streaks). It may be like Moser Baer India MCC004’s, where they are slightly different to their Taiwanese counterparts and therefore don’t burn well unless properly supported by the drives firmware.

#16

Please post the mediacode info from the other 8x burned discs.

#17

Sorry it took sooooo long to post the media code. From what i can see, its pratically identical to the one from the media that only burns at 8x. Here it is:
