I've been burning backups of my dvd collection for a couple of years now. I've always used good media - ritek or memorex branded media. My burners have always been Pioneers. Other than a few bad burns that wouldn't playback, it seemed like things worked OK. I've used the region free firmwares. My litmus test was just whether or not the dvd would playback.
Lately, I've been lurking here in freaks forums and started to read up on the quality tests that people have been doing. I've read all the reports of good media vs bad vs fake. I've visited all the different burner specific forums and I've got 2 Benq 1820's, 1 LG 4163, and 3 AOPEN 1648 dvd roms waiting for me to use in my system upgrades.
Now what is is confusing is that I decided to start scanning some of my backups with a Liteon 167 dvd rom and using kprobe and nero dvd speed. Without failure I'm been getting some pretty bad looking scans with PI errors averaging above 300 ( today I scanned a couple of dvd's with peaks in the 800-1000 range). PI failures totalling thousands (although max 3-6). What does this all mean? These dvd's seem to play fine. Are my eyes so unsophisticated that I'm not perceiving the poor quality? Are these tests just for geeks who want to get the perfect dvd copy while the average "joe" shouldn' waste his/her time with them.
On a side note, is it possible for previously viewable backups to lose this quality? I came across a couple of backups burned with Beall media 4X - media that weren't viewable anymore.
Thanks in advance for your replies
