Illegal disk or failed to write at once

Hi,

I am using Nero 6, latest update. Before the update I was backing up a few of my movies just fine, using my NEC ND 1300A and Sunstar DVD-R media. Now, when I try the same for some of my old movies for the road, I receive erors from Nero, like:

Illegal disk or
Failed to write at once

Why does this not work any more?

Thanks

It’s hard to say without the log file. Post it (you can save it from one of the buttons on the bottom of the burn dialog), removing your Nero serial number and, if you like, your name, from the first four lines before you do.

Win 200 : Liteon 811S : Ahead Nero : RitekG04 DVD-R

Got this message “Illegal disk” twice in a row.
It did write several disks succesfully before.
Any suggestions?
Here is the log. It is kind of big. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The error is indeed some kind of media error (sense code 0x30 is a media error).

It’s hard to know what to suggest. If there’s no firmware upgrade for your drive, try different media.

David

I have been trying the new version of Nero and a lot of my cds are failing with the same error. i have switched back to an older version that came bundled with my lg writer and now no problems.

It seems they did something not so good in their latest version.

tinku.

Such wild generalisation is often unhelpful - with DVD writers and Nero 6, usually the latest version works the best (early builds of Nero 6 are problematic, to say the least).

However, there are undoubtedly certain writers that work less well with particular versions. It’s sometimes a case of finding the version that works the best for you!

David

But if version 5 bundled with my writer works fine, why break it in version 6 + that surly is taking a step backwards and not improving the software.

Also why does a new version have to be 25 megs or so? why not release a small fix or upgrade the change log i have read doesn’t warrent a full download with cd covermaker ect.

If you buy a game you dont have to download 650meg again just to fix something.

your thoughts!

tinku

There were a lot of changes between Nero 5.5 and Nero 6 - it’s always possible support for your writer got broken somewhere along the line.

If so, it may be worth reporting to Ahead’s support.

I’m assuming from your second reply that Nero 5.5 was supplied with your writer. If so, it may be illustrative to try Nero 5.5.10.56, the latest version of Nero 5.5, which is available from ftp://ftp4.nero.com/Nero551056.exe.

So far as upgrades go, I’d think it’s simply too hard to try to issue patch files - though I’ve not analysed it that carefully, I think so many files change between releases that even a patch to go from the last Nero release to the current one would be so large that it’s barely worthwhile making it for the handful of people that would be able to use it and would want it.

You don’t have to download the NeroVision Express stuff if you don’t want to update it.

David

your right i have 5.5 bundled with my LG GCE-8520B

Firmware 1.04

i have tried 5.5.10 as suggested and it works fine burning a couple of my sony disks.

I tried again nero v.6 and still it seems broken with sony disks (they fail) but ok with tdk… strange.

I’ll stick to 5.5.10 as it seems to do the job ok.

thanks
