Illegal disc error while buring with Nero

Hi
I have been using Nero to burn my dvds all these years and off late, I have started getting this problem - Illegal disc. I am using a high quality DVD only - Sony DVD-R. However my laptop is little outdated one which I think should not be the problem. It is DELL Inspiron 5160. I have also pasted the log file from the Nero here. I have also flashed my firmware to the latest using the useful links provided in CDFreaks. Please help.

Patt

Please help me…I need to burn huge data onto DVDs and my laptop has already run out of space and I need to get rid of the movies to a DVD. Please HELP !!!

You could try ImgBurn & see if we can take Nero out of the equation.

Thanks for the response. But I am still not getting it through even through this. Please see the below snapshots that I got when I tried to burn. This time I tried it with Memorex DVD-R as well.

Try updating your firmware.
http://www.firmwarehq.com/NEC/ND-6500A/files.html
Get some good media.

I already have the latest version 2.25. However I tried flashing it again and tried to burn with Sony DVD-R and still getting the same problem. Please HELP!! Incase, if this problem is an unresolvable one, do I need to change my DVD drive itself to burn any DVD video files in future? I am still able to burn CDs.

Size: 4,578,904,064 bytes is too large for a dvd 5 . Unless im reading it wrong . You can only put about 4.3 gig on a dvd 5. Or in other words you can only use about 4.39 gigs out of 4.7 gigs.

Your best bet on media for this drive would be Verbatim 16x. If it fails with that, it may be time to look for another drive. Perhaps an external drive hooked up to the laptop via USB.

ImgBurn would give an error message about size scotton, which we are not seeing here.

4.25 is the latest version. Not 2.25.
4.25 is the latest version. Not 2.25.
does work that way, he has the latest.

I am not sure if I can use 4.25 as I had read somewhere that, only if i have existing version starting in 4.**, I can use 4.25. Also, the capacity of the DVD disc, that i had used is 4.7 gig and the file is of size 4.5 gig, so it should be ok?? I am not sure, if i get a Verbatim out here in India, but let me give it a shot. Thanks for all your help and in the meantime, if anyone has any other solution, pls. do send

Guys…I tried with Verbatim 16x as well this weekend and I tried it with Imgburn and Nero 9. I got the same error as in reply#4 and with Nero 9, I got "Could not perform ‘Disc-At-Once’ ". I am still able to burn CDs whereas I have issues only with DVDs. If it is an issue with the drive, how I am able to burn CDs alone?

Hi kpattb,

my name is Jim. I’d like to offer a suggestion:

I also have NERO on my machine (self-built) with a Sony DVD burner. I had similar problems trying to burn movies, but I have since switched to two free programs that I have gotten good results with. I use DVDFab Decrypter to put the movies on my hard drive and then I use DVD Shrink to burn them. You need to leave NERO on your computer to use Shrink, But like I said, I’ve gotten good results.

This is where I downloaded my copy (a trustworthy site) of DVD Shrink:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23009-page,1-c,videotools/description.html, or Google it.

Google DVDFab Decrypter, and download from a site you trust.

Hope this helps. If someone out there has a better solution, please share. I’d like to know what would cause these errors myself.

DVD drives use two different frequency lasers, one for cds and one for dvds. It is quite common for one of the lasers to go out and leave the other functional.

Try to clean the lens, otherwise the drive is partly defective already.
