I'll order some discs from SVP, recommendations? (Contains price information)

My needs:
Gamecube
Video
Backup

Since everyone hates the Ritek G04 and G05s I’ll start of by getting some other discs which might or might not work with my gamecube. I’ll probably skip the Fujifilm discs.

Secondly I need some good quality discs for other usage, I’ll probably order some MCC 004 Verbatims, and then a bunch of Taiyo Yudens, but 16x DVD+R TY are cheaper than 8x, how are the quality of these compared to eachother?
For 8x you can get much cheaper DVD-R TY-media from Datasafe, are those worse quality?

Discs will be burned with Pioneer DVR-112D or LG GSA-H42N (Haven’t decided which one yet) and scanned with LiteOn DH-20A1P-45C (oem-version, or maybe the regular sata one?)

Small list of current discs at SVP with price/each and links:

First discs are 8cm, then decent brands, then other brands.

The discs I consider buying, but which one of the later ones should I use?

For gamecube (test if anything non ritek works):
 1x 8cm 01RG20 (Verbatim) 0.6900 £
25x CMC MAG AE1 (HP) 0.1348
50x MCC 02RG20 (Infiniti) 0.1696

Other usage:
 50x MCC 004 (Verbatim) 0.2596
 25x YUDEN000T03 (Verbatim) 0.2116
100x YUDEN000T02 (Taiyo Yuden) 0.3162
100x TYG02 (Taiyo Yuden) 0.2432
       or
100x TYG02 (Datasafe) 0.1498

Problem there will be the gamecube these are very picky in meny case’s i have read that the only disc that works on atleast 90% of GC’s are Ritek G04s ( traxdata branded is what i use for it ). The verbatim MCC01RG20’s for me work fine but for meny they dont, there was a thread on here where a user’s GC would’nt read them.

For me when advising on GC backups i would say give the verbs a bash but if they dont work use G04’s but also make backups on the games on full size discs (ty,mcc, your choice really). You can fit 3 GC iso backups on a 12cm disc.

The datasafe TY’s i’m not sure but they may be like the value line you get in the states, someone else can confirm this.

Yedi master yoda:
I’ve used unbranded G05s and datasafe branded Ritek G04s, and also tried Traxdata and Fortis Ritek G04s, all worked.

I’ve had 16x Verbatim printable DVD-Rs which didn’t worked, but then my burner is the LG GMA-4020B (2x DVD-R…) so it might have bad write strategies for those discs maybe?

The discs over there are the only options which might work except the Riteks thought. If they don’t work I guess I’ll just have to order the Traxdata G05s.

Yeah, I saw the thread there they didn’t worked, but one could order them in 1 piece so it doesn’t hurt to try I guess, also my friends Gamecube got original case so he can’t use 12cm discs. My gamecube is european DOL-001 btw.

Yeah, I saw the backup suggestions in another thread, very good idea. I wonder how many of my 2-300 Ritek discs which are gone by this date thought… Haven’t used them for a year or so so who knows

Can’t comment on the GC thing as I don’t own one any more…but for other usage MCC004 is a great choice :iagree:…and the 100 pack of YUDEN000 T02, is that the printable ones? If so they’re really good

I also wanna thank kg evilboy for answering all my questions and helping me decide which discs to consider and get and so on, and also pioneer vs lg discussion over ICQ, sorry for all the spam :D.

I hope this thread can help someone else who also want to compare current prices of the discs.

Arachne: Yeah, the expensive T02s are printable ones. I like the surface of printable ones over blank ones a lot since it’s much easier to write and read what is written on them. Are they better in some other way to? Harder to scratch?

I’m not sure which of the “quality” media to get, but maybe the more expensive ones are worth it aswell?

The surface is definitely better than the siny silver variety (not as many fingerprints!)…don’t know about harder to scratch though, never tried

They burn beautifully as well. I prefer +R mainly anyway, so if it were me I’d get those.

As I said, you can’t go wrong with the T02, and the MCC004 (wherever they’re made) has always been good for me. The T03s are nice as well, I tend to burn them at 8-12x though. I have some Verbatim T03s too which I’m yet to try.

And you’re in good hands with Evilboy :iagree:

TYG03 doesnt work on my gc

The 16x verbatims and taiyo yudens where for other usage where I wanted good discs.

For gamecube the discs I would try was Verbatim 8cm 01RG20, HP CMC MAG AE1 and Infiniti MCC 02RG20.

oh right well TY’s all the way for other stuff imo or some nice mcc’s

TYG02 Datasafe their 9 pence cheaper and come spindle’d and from what ive seen havent been scratched etc when delivered i havent had any yet so i cant confirm but ill get some and confirm it for u

I’m waaay to lazy to go thru prices in yet another store. Ordering from UK instead of Sweden is a huge saving for me anyway, first there are very hard to find taiyo yuden media over here, secondly we have “copy taxes” on media which makes it much more expensive.

I have 4 full boxes (4x600) of the Infiniti media and then some 100’s of discs and i wouldn’t have them if i didn’t think they were very good. I’d go as far as saying it’s my preferred backup media these days. Burned @ 4x in the 112 they produce great quality scans. (And before i’m beaten down) I know quality scans doesn’t say much about discs but the great results and the fact i only have one reject out of 500 (and it’s probably down to mechanical error) makes me think they are decent. The current box price at svp is a steal (as someone else noted there)

(I recommed buying one cakebox first to check them out… -I didn’t and i didn’t regret :stuck_out_tongue: )

Would that be the Infiniti 8x DVD-R or Infiniti 16x DVD-R ?

EDIT: Probably the Infinity 8x DVD-R shown here, right?!
I could live with results like that!

Since the ones I wrote about was the 8x, he burned at 4x, and only the 8x is available in 600 packs I guess the 8x.

Yep sorry - the Infiniti 8x discs. I stock them heavily since the box price is pretty attractive for me

Who said everyone hates Ritek? All I use is Ritek and TY on Audio and Video!

1x 8cm 01RG20 (Verbatim) 0.6900 £
25x CMC MAG AE1 (HP) 0.1348
50x MCC 02RG20 (Infiniti) 0.1696

Those are great choices. MCC02RG20 is great media. Are you planning on using this in your GC? I don’t know for sure if it will work but it is one of the most compatible media I have used. Also, AE1 is a great disc. I’ve gotten good results with them, especially with my Pioneer 111. Your 112 should also burn them well if you buy them.

I’d use the verbatims or CMC for everything, including GC backups if you can.

Are the CMC £3.37 per 25 spindle?? That’s a nice price. I would definitely try a spindle of that and the verbatims.
