I have an older mobo without onboard sata (sony vaio prefabed asus pb4-lx 1.7gh p4). I am wondering with the lessening availability of ide drives, would it be worth it to get a pci sata host controller add on to support the sata opticals? What about the bi-directional converters? Are these even viable options or will there be problems? Are there inherent advantages to sata vs pata?
I am looking for reliability and longevity as I have toasted a total of 3 dvd writers over the last few years (sony dru 500 refurbished, emprex ?? open box, liteon 20A1 retail) My latest aquisitions are optiarc 7201a and asus 1814bl - 'sgood? or should I look at increasing my options to sata?
And are there any care and feeding tips I should look into to increase the lifespan of my drives? Surprisingly the emprex lasted the longest, but the liteon quit around a year or less, so I'll be avoiding that brand in the future.
