I wish to buy a new DVD burner, which is the best one?

I’m considering buying a new writer, but not sure which one to get.

Currently, I’m using 2 writers, both are Lite-On (LH-20A1H and 1693S), but recently my 20A1H started to act strangely (refused to open the door, forcing me to open it manually), so I’m thinking about replacing it with a newer model.

Frankly, I’m not very impressed by its performance, as I found it performed “not so good” with Verbatim (Taiwan) +R16X, compared to my old writer, 1693S, and Cd Audio writing is also below average.

I’m not sure if the newer model, 20A4H, would be any different, or should I get the other brands?

How about Pioneer 216BK? Is it any better than Lite-On above?

I’d be happy to hear your suggestions.

PS: No plextor please, as I think it’s far too expensive for me, so any writer in the same price range with Pioneer and Lite-On would be great.

Thanks for your reply.

Too bad that here in Thailand, my choice is very limited, and the availability of that Optiarc drives are just simply out of question.

Only available options for me are BenQ (if they’re still making DVD-RW), Philips, Lite-On (very plentiful here), Pioneer, LG, and Samsung.

Speaking about Lite-On and Pioneer, only models available are 20A4H and 216BK.

Comparing these two models, which one do you think is better?

I will use it mainly for burning disc, and I have no interest in ripping (e.g. ripping speed, ripping protected disc). If the drive can write CD (particularly Audio CD) as good as, or better than, my 1693S, it would be nice. Lastly, the drive must be IDE interface as I have no SATA slot left in my system.

This evening on my way back home, I saw a shop selling some Pioneer 115D. I know this model is now replaced by a newer one, but as it got a good reputation here, I decided to give it a try.

And attached is my first scan of the first disc burnt with the drive. Not an excellent scan of course, but good enough.

The disc is Verbatim 16X +R (MCC004) burnt at 12X, and scanned by Lite-On 20A1H.

I have to say the 216 is a good buy, I was in your position last week and am happy with my purchase. It burns very well at high speeds.

Nice burn and choice of drives. I have the 115D myself.

these are my primary drives as well. i use my 20A1P for ripping and scanning and my 115D for burning only.

your 20A1H has updated official firmware.
http://www.liteonit.com/DOWNLOADS/ODD/LH-20A1H/firmware/LL0D.zip

with out knowing what firmware the 115D came with here is the latest available.
http://wwwbsc.pioneer.co.jp/cgi-bin/www1/download/file_get_e2.pl?file=DVR115D_FW118EU2.EXE

if you are into firmware patches they are available for both drives? and i use them.

Thanks for the info, troy.

Regarding 115D, do you know how to reduce the initial spin noise when the disc is inserted?

I mean, when I insert a disc into the drive, no matter if it’s CD or DVD, the drive will spin very fast making very loud noise for 10 or so secs, and then will stop. It’s the same sound the drive generates in “lead-in” period with every burn.

i have a feeling that something will be available soon. :flower:

/Me wait for the solution to be available.

Today I compared my 115D among my Lite-On drives (20A1H and 1693S), and discovered that 115D is simply better in >8X burn.

Attached is the scan of a Verbatim 16X disc burnt by my 1693S at 12X speed. The disc came from the same spindle as the above I previously posted, and with Pioneer, everything is simply better (PIE, PIF, Jitter).

I know that it’s 4X vs 8X scan but the difference is not much anyway if I were to scan this disc at 4X.

i would not be happy with those results either. :frowning:

so this burn is from the 1693S burn at 12x? i dont know how long you have had the drive but by now its release is over 3 years ago.

do you have the latest firmware? [quality patched firmware]
http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/quality-patched-1693s-firmware-1673s-1693s-720a-800a-kc4b-152583/

do you use SmartBurn functions? download settings utility and set Force Hyper Tuning and Online Hyper Tuning.
http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/settings-utility-liteon-drives-v1-1-0-new-241940/

use cdspeeds create disc, burn at 8x and scan with the 20A1H. post both the burn and the scan results.

and just for curiosity what were the results of the “115D is simply better in >8X burn” scan.
