I've was on the last week of warranty -phew. Got it back recently, and have yet not experienced any error.
STAY AWAY from the IDE drivers in the UDF-package from Nvidia. They will list as "NVIDIA NForce 2(tm) SPP/IGP ATA Controller" in your device manager.
MAKE SURE you are using the "Nvidia Nforce MCP2 IDE Controller" signed by Microsoft, running drivers:
They WON'T give you troubles.
People get confused, because there is still "Nvidia" in the DeviceManager name, but they are still standard Mickysoft ones.
I can't even recommend the Nvidia-miniport drivers for plain harddisk use, since the are REALLY buggy, I could write an essay about this, but it is obsolete, if you just stay away from them.
If you just hook up optical devices to the onboard IDE, Microsofts drivers won't give you a performance hit at all.
For harddisk performance an extra pci-controller would be a good idea. (or the onboard S-ata of course, but hd prices need to fall for them, first.)
