Trying to understand the SMART readings of my choking HD, I browsed the web and found... not so much... except many articles saying how SMART is great and that it's gonna save our lives.
About the SMART attributes themselves, few info is available. It seems that each maker does a bit what he wants about them.
Then, I installed a shareware called "Active SMART" that is supposed to help watching SMART attributes variations. In fact it does not help very much...
- I can't stop it from popping up each time the disk temperature varies of one degree (there is an option for that but it's ignored apparently; a bug).
- When an attribute changes, Active SMART only tells you about it, without giving any specific help about this very parameter (how bad is it that this change happened, for example). It does not even make any difference between a positive and a negative change (you have to guess that too).
- No verification at all is performed on the "raw data" (not even remembering last value and let you know the variation).
- Because of another bug (I suppose), the icon in the system tray is sometimes "unresponsive" (its menu's items do nothing, except for the "close" one). You have to close the app and start it again to fix this.
If anyone knows a better tool, or a good source of information about SMART attributes, please let me know.
Thanks for your attention.
