Hello,

I joined this forum because I really need your help .
My problem is actually solved, but the links that I need are so old that they are inactive…
Here - http://club.myce.com/f44/interesting-problems-litefirm-upgrade-lite-486s-61069/

So, I have Lite-On LTN-486S (which is ancient 48x CD-ROM) and the one that I have is Compaq branded. So what I wanna do is update the firmware and thus debrand it…
There is a flasher for the drive, but it won’t flash since there is a version mismatch (since it’s Compaq drive). The exe flasher is attached here if you wanna see it.
Anyhow, I tried the application that patches these exe flashers so that they can be used on any drive (FlashFix) - didn’t work.
I tried converting exe to bin with litefirm - no luck.
Interesting thing is that both tools work with exe flasher for my ancient 24x CD-RW drive, but not with this CD-ROM drive…

If you made it so far then thanks for reading

So anyway… if someone can help me flash this - I will be eternally grateful!
For real!

Well it doesn’t let me upload… Anyway you can get the flasher here:

Have you tried any of the flash tools for a newer Lite On drive ?
The ones COdeKing posts.
I don’t know if they would work or not.
I just wanted to know if you already tried before I find some links for them.

I didn’t… Can it help me extract bin from this exe? I guess that’s the first step for any flasher…
Well anyway, please give me a link and I can take a look…

Thanks

This is the COdeKing Public Profile link.
Check the LiteOn tools.

COdeKing has posted firmware for many LiteOn drives .
I didn’t see any for yours but you might have more information that would help you search.

No luck - this tool doesn’t seem to support the drive and buttons to write/read are grayed out.
I wish I could get a hold of those files that were posted on that old thread… :frowning:
And I really like this drive and just wanna flash it

Bad news - none of the 2 litefirm versions could extract the bin from that exe…

I wasn’t sure if you had this .
http://zdenek.myftp.org/litefirm.html
I couldn’t get it to extract anything from the zip file you attached maybe you will have better results.
I did the drop & drag first then I also ran it from a command window so I could see the results.

This is what it shows:
C:\Users\User\Documents\yson>LITEFIRM YS0N.EXE .bin
LiteON-IT EXE-To-BIN Firmware Extraction Utility. Reanimate Your CD-RW

Reading YS0N.EXE
No generic firmware for new CD writer by Lite-ON found.
Now trying to search for some specific supported types.
Reading YS0N.EXE
Running XFLASH generic search…
The file YS0N.EXE doesn’t contain any Lite-ON Firmware. Sorry…

That seems odd since the YS0N.EXE came from lite on .
I’m out of ideas.

Well thanks for helping anyway… Seems like all these utilities aren’t designed for CD-ROM BINs and seems those BIN files are smaller in size too - 64 KB. Maybe this is part of the problem.
Older utilities seemed to work, but those are nowhere to be found in year 2013…

Sorry to revive such an old thread but I just so happened to stumble across the same issue, and wanted to de-brand it for the hell of it… Anyway, was super simple! All the flasher does is a string check against the drive. So by changing offset 2F1A0 in the YS0N.exe flasher from LITEON to COMPAQ and changing the firmware string at 2F1BC to the version of your Compaq drive (in my case YQS8), the flasher will load and happily flash the drive to the original Lite-On firmware.

Totally useless for anyone nowadays probably I guess, but for my retro rig this is a perfect drive (and no pesky drawer belt drive, cogs all the way!)

Cheers,
Rich
