I/O MAGIC 16x burner from COMPUSA $69.99 after rebates

I took a chance and purchased a I/O MAGIC 16x burner hoping it would be a BENQ 1620. I used the latest DVDINFO PRO to see the drive information which reads DVDRW IDE 16X. Is that a BENQ or a BTC drive? Firmware says A07F. If it’s not a BENQ then I’m returning the sucka. LOL! Any information on this will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Find an I/O magic with spec 40x CDR and 2.4x DL, you’ll get a benq.
BTC will say 48x cdr and 4x DL.

i returned the drive and checked all the I/O MAGIC boxes at COMPUSA. i was bummed out that all of them were BTC drives. the firmware is on the outside of the box which is BTC. i only wanted the challenge of flashing the drive if it was a BENQ. the price was cheap with the instant and mail in rebate. i guess i’ll just wait until the newer BENQ and PIONEER drives are released.

Try a Circuit City if you have one nearby. I picked up an IOMagic there a few days ago, and it is the Benq 1620. They should match CompUSA’s price. If not, buy one at each store, and return the BTC one to CC.

@69.99, y not just pick up real benq 1620 oem? 69.99 for brand new oem @ newegg or 59.29 for refurbished oem also @ newegg

It seems as if IO magic dropped BenQ and is now using BTC for their supplier. You have to go somewhere where they still might have old stock. I agree with wity, why don’t you just buy the OEM drive from Newegg (that’s where I got mine), it is the same price, and you know exactly what you are getting.

He lives (or own? :stuck_out_tongue: ) in a beautiful island in the west coast and shipping to his island can cost half the price.

I would try the drive swap, but perhaps you have better morals than me. :cop:  :cop:

LOL! Nope I don’t own Honolulu, Hawaii I just live here. Today I actually got a I/O MAGIC 16x drive from OFFICE DEPOT near my office. I read the box to make sure it said 2.4x speed for DL. I just opened up the box and on the drive itself it does say BENQ 1620, firmware B7C9, manufacture date is August 2004. I’m a happy camper right now. I won’t have time to test the drive because I have to reinstall a new mobo into one of my pc’s. Hopefully I’ll get to play with the drive sometime this weekend. I purchased some MAXELL DVD+R 8x speed discs from OFFICE DEPOT sale not bad for $5.97 for a 15 pack spindle.

I got OFFICE DEPOT to match price COMPUSA but they would only honor the $10.00 instant rebate but they will honor the instant rebate of CIRCUIT CITY as well. I have to take in the CIRCUIT CITY ad tomorrow and they will give me another instant rebate of $20.00. The drive will only cost me $ 73.92 after the price matching from both stores. If I ordered the BENQ from Newegg.com it would cost me $ 95.00 because shipping to HAWAII is expensive. That is the reason why I held out to see if I could actually get a I/O MAGIC 16x drive without having to pay high shipping costs.

To Zevia thanks for the advice on what to look for on the I/O MAGIC box!

Newegg has the Benq 1620 OEM for $69.99 without the need for rebates.

I know that already. I don’t have the luxury of getting fed xpress saver shipping. For Hawaii & Alaska we have no choice but to pay for 2nd day shipping which is anywhere between $21.00 and up depending how many items when ordering from newegg.com. The instant rebates I received saved me from paying shipping costs.
