I need help, i know nothing

Hey i have a DV-W58G-A dvd drive which i bought last year, and i have been burning 4.7 dvd disks, but now i got some 8.5 gb dvd disks, but i cant burn them i need to update my firmware, but i dont know what firmware i have i havent touched anything since i bought the recorder. can any one help, me explain to me what i need to know, i e-mailed teac to ask them but they just said that if i upadte with the wrong firmware it'll kill my dvd recorder, them i e-mailed them requesting other info but they didnt respond (bastards).
can any one please help me.

Your drive was designed, marketed, and sold as a single-layer burner. It's not supposed to be a double-layer burner, so asking Teac isn't going to get you anywhere.

But you can convert it to a double-layer burner if you want; it'll void your warranty, but it's an old drive anyway. Since the W58G-A is based on the SOHW-812S, you can convert it to a 832S and burn double-layer 8.5 GB media; use the VS0G "patched - crossflashing" firmware (or CG5G; either will work):

I download it, and instaled it, it burns normal dvds ( dvd 5 ), but it doesn`t want to burn dvd 9, it says error, power failure.

Does it actually say Power Calibration Error? If so it could be your DL discs are crap.

What software are you using to burn?

Yes,
and i'm using nero 6.6.0.14
and the disks are Memorex Dvd+R double layer 2.4x

I would guess it is the media - if you really want to use DL media, try another brand and see if it works. A lot of DL media is currently of very variable quality.

Then those discs would be Ritek D01.

Currently I think that Ritek and Verbatim are the only two manufacuters making +R DL. From what I've heard it's only the verbatims that are worth buying. I've read loads of stories about people having problems with the Riteks.

Yep! RITEKD01 (which is what Memorex uses) may be cheap on paper, but once you figure in their very high failure rate, they're really more expensive than Verbatims.
