Intel, AMD, Apple, HP and Sony fight against Canadian CD levy

Mgz points us to an article on the Inquirer website. The article describes an unlikely coalition of the Canadian branches of Intel and AMD, as well as HP, Sony, Motorola, Apple, Costco and Staples.

Together they're attempting to prevent a proposal that would hike the price of 100 blank CD-R's and make them soar by a not insignificant 181%:

And the coalition '“ dubbed the Canadian Coalition for Fair Digital Access (CCFDA) -- has teamed up with Industry and Heritage Canada against the Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC) proposal.

MP3 players could be withdrawn from the market if the proposal goes ahead, the report said.

Canada appears to be the only country with such an additional tax, the wire claims, causing people to cross the border, south, or to buy from the grey market or the Internet.

The article does mention that the claim that only Canada has additional taxes is not entirely true. Countries like France, Germany and Denmark also have high taxes on things like music tapes, hard disks and of course CD-Recordables.
