So I'm completely at wits end. It all started with AnyDVD. I downloaded a copy and it wasn't working on my brand new DELL Studio XPS 435. After days working with a moderator on that forum he tells me he believes the DVD drive that came with the PC is on it's way out. I don't believe it but what the hell, I want a Blu-ray player anyway. So I bought a new drive.
I picked a GGC-H20L DVD/writer/Blu-ray player. I bought it online from a reputable company in California.
Drive comes in on Monday. Hook it up via SATA to a port on my mother board directly next to the port for my OEM DVD writer. Boot up the PC and the BIOS sees the drive. Windows 64 Ultimate takes WAY TOO long to boot up. Then finally when it does boot up it's super slow. Also, what's odd is the new LG player keeps trying to "initialize" you know like when you first close the door. It hums, the light blinks, the icon on the screen turns to a CD momentarily. It does this every 3 seconds thus making the machine super slow. The drive is displayed in explorer and device manager as working but if I put a CD in I get nothing. The thing just keeps trying to "initialize".
Everything looking good but not working I go and I disconnect my OEM drive to get that out of the picture and I connect the new drive directly to the SATA cable from the OEM drive. So it's using the OEM cable and the OEM port location on the motherboard...... same thing. So I figure, the drive is bad. I call, and try to get a new one shipped to me. I had to leave my credit card as insurance that I don't walk off with another drive. Replacement drive comes in and of course...... same thing!!
Now I get on the phone with DELL. Make a long story short, they say it's not their problem since the OS and the OEM drive is working fine. I get on the phone with LG and they say since this is the second drive there's no problem with their product. They also tell me that Vista 64 bit is buggy with drives..... big help right??
So I'm stuck. I searched online with no luck at all. I have no idea what to do since nobody has any suggestions and both parties are blaming the other. I have two LG drives, one needs to be sent back and I'm sure they will charge me a restocking fee since they will test it and find nothing wrong. Then I have another drive here that's just not working with my PC.
Here's the facts to clarify.
Brand new (2 months old) Dell Studio XPS 435, core i7 with 6 gb ram
Vista 64 bit ultimate
SATA, running a mirrored RAID for my hard drives
SATA#3 goes to the OEM Optiarc DVD drive
SATA#4 goes to the LG drive in question
I have tried......
3 different SATA cables
switched SATA ports
2 different LG H20L drives
Upper filter fix from Microsoft
Have not tried...
There's a BIOS update for my motherboard that addresses RAID, but they tell me it will destroy my array and I will have to reload windows so I haven't tried it.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated..... thanks!!
