My HP DVD840 suddenly stopped recognizing any DVD discs. It will read any type of data or audio CD. DVD discs bring up "no disc found". What might be causing this? Windows XP Pro SP2 on a Pentium 4 desktop.
Could be a dead DVD laser-diode. Try booting from a bootable DVD (Vista, Linux,...). If that still works, uninstall any virtual drive software (Daemon Tools, Alcohol,...).
