[qanda]This thread is about the HP DVD840i. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]Alright so I have been having a problem with my 840b drive. Originally before, it was only being seen as a cd drive, and would not read dvd’s at all. So I found online to clean my registry and it fix the problem. So I can watch dvd’s now on the drive, but it does not detect burnable dvd drives. Here are the following steps I performed. (Note: This drive has no problem with CD’s, or reading dvd’s, just detecting burnable dvd’s.)

 1. Went to Device Manger, Suprisely I have two primary IDE channels and one secondary IDE channels, even though I only have two dvd drives. I checked all three IDE channels to make sure they were set up for DMA and they are.

 2. I have tried cleaning the lense, no luck.

 3. I updated my firmware to the latest, no luck.

 4. I clean my registry again, no luck.

 5. I have tried burning it with two separate media, one dvd-r and the other dvd-ram, both were unable to be detected.

 6. Tried burning with Nero on both dvd-r and dvd ram, no luck.

 7. Tried burning again changing the speed to 2x on both dvd-r and dvd ram, no luck.

 8. Tried burning with two seperate programs (1clickokay and clone dvd) for each dvd, no luck.

And I believe that’s it, below is a copy of the logs I saved for burning it with nero. Just in case it might help.

Welcome to CDF

Do you have Alcohol, Daemon Tools, or any other virtual drive/emulation software on your PC?

#3

Thanks for the welcome. I appreciate it.

Actually no I do not. The only programs I have dedicated towards burning purposes are clone dvd, nero 8, 1clickokay, and the sonic that came with the computer. I did use the nerotool info if you would like to see. I’ll post it just in case it can help. Also should I obtain any of these programs like alcholol or daemon tools?

No, no need to install Alcohol or Daemon Tools - I mentioned them because they can cause problems like the one you’re describing

You mention you have Sonic installed - do you have Sonic Drag to Disk or Sonic DLA installed along with that?

If so, uninstalling that portion might help

#5

Oh I see, and No, I don’t have either of those. Sense Sonic was a rather pathetic tool in my opinion, I did not use it at all even though it was preloaded when I bought the pc. I went straight to Nero. So the only Sonic program I have is Sonic Digital Media which of course goes to different option like recordnow Audio, Data, etc, and MyDvDPlus.

#6

OK, before I ask you to try a rather long solution, have you tried different brands of blank DVD to see if it’s just the one brand not being recognised?

Edit: another question - do you have the install CDs or files for all your burning softwares? It relates to what I’m going to ask you to try next

#7

Oh Yeah, it’s number 5.

) I have tried burning it with two separate media, one dvd-r and the other dvd-ram, both were unable to be detected.

The dvd-r was a tdk brand while the dvd-ram was fujifilm. I currently live in Japan so I only have access to japanese dvd’s. And I have files for most of the burning software. I can’t quite remember where my clone dvd is located but I know where my nero and 1clickdvd is.

#8

OK. What I was going to ask, is for you to uninstall all your burning software, then see if any blank DVDs are recognised.

If they are, then add back your burning applications til you find out which one is causing the problem.

But before you try that, take a look at the link in my signature for “deleting your upper and lower filters”, follow the instructions (there’s a Guided Help in case you’re wary about manually editing the Registry), and see if that helps.

BTW, in Japan you get easy access to Taiyo Yuden manufactured discs, excellent media

#9

After the long uninstalling processes and performing the deleting of filters. Still No Go. Definitely frustrating. When I placed in the dvd, the green light flashes for about 8-12 seconds every time, and than just stops.

Edit: Actually my problem has became worse as now it does not read regular dvd’s either. What actually happened?

#10

Ugh, sorry to put you through all that with no solution.

All I can suggest now, is try a couple more brands of disc, or as a last resort, can you try the drive in another PC, in case it’s a hardware problem?

#11

alright well thanks for your time.

#12

Sorry, didn’t see the edit.

Can you explain by “doesn’t read regular DVDs?”

All deleting your upper/lower filters does is take out various low-level drivers installed by some burning programs (I know CloneCD has one)…reinstall any burning programs that now don’t seem to work as they should, and they’ll put their filter drivers back in.

This is why I asked if you still have the install discs etc, so if something doesn’t work correctly, you can just reinstall the program (and it’s drivers).

However, not reading or recognising pre-burned or commercial discs isn’t a side-effect I’ve come across from taking out your upper and lower filters. Usually, burning programs, if anything, can be affected. I’ve done it several times on my own PC with no ill-effects.

But trying the drive on another PC would definitely eliminate any software problems.
