HI All, well this is my first pot round here , after many seraches , and indeed many hours of trying to find someone who has had same problem as me, but to no avail, so I have to start a new thread.
So I purchased and HP 640i DVD R / R-W Dual Layer , Lightscribe from over clockers.co.uk.
Everything seemed to be going fine until I took it out of the packet . So anyways I take it out of the packet. I then tried to install the software which came with this product, prior to instaillation , as stated in the manual, this proved to be a problem form my old toshiba, so I coudl not get it to happen , so though well what the hey , I will take it out , put in the new drive, and then install it using that , as even if the pc does not function corrctly at this stage, it will function well enough to install the software I need, then I can simply rebbot pc , and start the required process. This seemed to go fine , so I proceeded to install the software , which seemed to work, apart from one or two errrs on the install, however it did complete , and it recognised this drive in both Device manager , and in the bios . The problem started when I tried to update the firmware for the 640i, which there is an automatic tool to do this , in the software I installed from the instillation disc.
So to move on , I got the pc recognise the drive in the place stated previosuly, (the device manager list , and in the bios,) but it woud not recognise it as a dvd rw in the my computer section, not only this but every time I started attempted to use the disc , it caused my pc to stutter , by this I mean , it woudl freeeze for a second every second, until reboot was done , and then woudl happen again , anytime that process was repeateded , ie trying to use the drive.
Now the HP sopfware did detect this drive and recognise it as a 640c, for which I was confused. So i then tried to run it as a slave with my old, and then every other configuration you can imagine therafter (using two drive, one being the hp, the other my old one) , and to my success I finally got it to work.
However , once I managed to get it reading fine , and even writing a CDR, i thought ok , I will buy some media for this now . (OH BTW , it only reads as a CDR/W in my computer by this point) and went to try and write something , ie large file for dvd's . no luck would not write.
I have tried delting IDE controllers , and letting XP re detect them in the hope it woudl pick up the correct ones, that did not work.
I have ran it in cable select , slave, master , does not make a difference.
I have updated to ES04 Firmware from HP sites, but this has not helped.
I used a LOGIK dvd RW disc to burn pn, maybe I shoudl try another >?
The drive will play DVD's read DVD's , just not write to them
Anyways if anyoen can help me out that woud be great , as overclockers are going to charge me a tenner to return this item, as they say they cannot determine if it is faulty.
I am generally not too bad with pc, but am still a Noob in comparison to mostof you guys I reckon.
So any advice / tips / help / would be really massively appreciated.
PS> Just as I finished writing this , my pc case door , just fell out as the hP drive ejected randomly a dvd from last night SCARED :a the drive from hell...
