HP 16x Lightscribe SATA made by LG

I asked this question already in the LiteOn section.

Does somebody know if this burner is based on a LG drive?

If the picture from ebuyer is correct, then it is probably an LG. The indentations on the top are typical of LG writers. There is only one known SATA LG model, the GSA-H30N. I’m not sure how the specs match up, but since that seems to be only one known SATA LG model, my guess is that it is an OEM H30N.

One exception is the Lightscribe functionality. I thought the GSA-H30N has no Lightscribe whereas the HP one has Lightscribe: http://h18002.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12549_div/12549_div.PDF

So it could be indeed a GSA-H30L.

more precisely, an OEM version of the H30L.
since it has no DVD-RAM. OEM versions of LG drives are often without the DVD-RAM capability.

The OEM version of a drive LG never released. Or did they release a GSA-H30L?

The biggest issue will be maybe the firmware supply from HP. Any experiences with that, is HP a reliable supplier?

well, since LG released the H30N it’s strange they didn’t release the H30L.
(maybe they did and we just don’t know about it yet ?)

incidentally, the H30L reported in a HP computer, is apparently a ‘regular’ retail drive: a GSA (not GMA, GWA etc.).

hmm…but it’s ‘DVDRRW’ not ‘DVD-RAM’ drive. i wonder why…
(according to the InfoTool screenshot the drive does have DVD-RAM capability).

we’re making a reasonable assumption, that the 2 drives are identical except for the LightScribe capability.
even if LG won’t release the H30L (and thus no firmware support for it), i guess it would still be possible to crossflash to H30N (with a little help from TDB). but that would mean giving up the LightScribe feature.

i’ve no idea how good HP is for firmware support.
for that matter, LG hasn’t been that great either of late.

It seems to be a GSA-H31L:

A GSA-H30L without DVD-RAM writing. Wonder if you can crossflash it to a GSA-H30L.

well, i was talking about pika2000’s drive, and that’s a HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H30L.

it’s a reasonable assumption that the H30L and H31L are based on the same chipset. so a crossflash is a reasonable possibility, that is if a firmware update for the H30L will ever be available from LG. so far they haven’t released this model (as far as we know).

I was talking about the HP model I asked about in this threat.

So, let’s wait and see. I doubt LG will ever release a firmware for both drives, unfortunately.

I got finally my HP AH048AA drive and it turned out to be indeed a LG GSA-H31L.
I took some pictures, nothing special, just wonder why HP included two SATA cables and chose such a big box. Anyway the drive comes with Roxio DigitalMedia Plus, InterVideo WinDVD and one Verbatim DVD+R 16x.

I had no trouble here with my Intel 946 board installing it, it worked without a problem on the SATA controller.
Unfortunately I have no CDSpeed capable drive here at the moment but at least I can say the drive is very quiet compared to the LiteOn LH-18A1H I had before. And the GSA-H31L can finally read all the pressed Video DVD-ROMs the LH-18A1H was unable to recognize and to read! -> http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=202398&highlight=18A1H

firmware 1.05 !

Is that somehow strange?

well, it implies (?) that there were 1.00, 1.01, etc…
and yet we’ve hardly heard of this drive. much less so many firmware updates.

It seems HP sells this drive as an HP machine update option since November. Maybe HP shipped already machines with it before. I think most drives present in forums like Club CD Freaks are available as a bulk or as a retail device but that drive isn’t so far as I know.

Printed some LightScribe DVDs with this SATA drive and Nero 7 CoverDesigner today. I used the LightScribe ELCU tool too and labeling worked without a problem.

Actually I got the HP AH048AT which is the “promo” package of the AH048AA, the drives are the same: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/sm/WF06c/A1-1059235-1061485-1061485-1067899-1067899-77884013.html

Hi i’m italian computer technician and i have the gsa-h31l, i’m looking for the firmware of this drive.
Someone can help me?
