How to record 6 hours on a dvd-dl

I have recently installed a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223C SATA dual layer DVD recorder. I want to copy some VHS tapes (at least 17) that were recorded in SLP (6 hours) per tape. I have Plextor convertX PX–TV402U that allows me to record from a VCR to my computer. I have been trying to record one of these tapes and get the file size down to 8GB but have been unsuccessful.

Any ideas welcome
Thanks

My problem is with the software I currently have loaded. I cannot find the correct updates to upgrade my WinDVR 5 to the latest version. I downloaded the latest upgrade but it will not install because my version is missing one or more upgrades. I believe I have the original version that came with the unit I bought sometime around 2002. I contacted plextor but have not received a reply.
