I have my Samsung plasma HDTV for almost two years and I don’t do anything special. It does gets hot but it’s typical for a plasma.
Everyday it turns on and off a few times but I always turn it off (or standby actually) whenever not in use. And often I turned of everything from the surge protector before I sleep.
The only “maintenance” I apply to my family is ask them not to touch the TV is possible. I just hate to see finger prints on the black piano finish. The Logitech Harmony comes in handy for this case, especially since the original samsung remote doesn’t allow to choose a particular input with a single button (I have to rotate inputs, ie if I want to go from HDMI#2 back to HDMI#1 I need to rotate to other inputs before getting back to HDMI#1).
The Samsung panel is listed for 60,000 hour life, in extreme case if you watch say for 12 hours a day, theoretically it will last for 13 years. Good enough for me.
