How safe is your webcam? BBC demos access via Java vulnerability

Besides keeping Windows and the browser up to date, some users don’t realise that many attacks are focused on vulnerable versions of Java, Adobe reader, etc.

Besides risking a nasty infection such as the infamous ransomware type infection recently, the BBC has published a video giving a demonstration of how a hacker can use an innocent looking forum post that provides the hacker with webcam access to whoever views the post with a vulnerable Java plug-in. Besides webcam access, the hacker also gets full remote control access over the victim’s computer.

Well, my computer’s webcam has a built-in cover, designed to keep out dust and scratches. So, I think it’s safe to say the only thing that’s actually vulnerable to hacking/interception is the mic, and well… pretty much everything else!
