How often does LG update firmware?

I’m considering between lg 4163 and nec 3520. After all, it appears that lg does support setting booktype and now I’m wondering how often does lg update their firmware. This is an essential question because I know that the nec guys are doing their best to implement all weird stuff like overspeeding and new disc types in their unofficial firmwares.
And by the way, how does the burning quality of these two drives compare?

Too subjective. Narrow your question.

How often does LG release a new version of firmware for a specific drive in general?

GSA-4040B has firmware version names like A301 and A304. What’s A114 for?

I would have to say if you want an enthusiast firmware, or a hacked one, your best bet is with the NEC. Not much has been done with the LG drives in regards to over speeding or anything like that. Heck I think the only mod we have for the LG drives is rpc1 firmware, and that is it. Nothing else really. No hacks nothing.

Lg’s readme says that you can upgrade your firmware only if there aren’t any other drives on the secondary ide channel. Can anybody confirm?

#8

ahhh… sorry
the A1xx are for OEM drives

the first time I upgraded the firmware, I followed all the rules, wich as you might imagine, gave me a lot of trouble opening the box and removing the other drive, on my second upgrade I just thought “I’m feeling lucky” and did it with the the other drive connected, everything worked out ok, but of course I wouln’t garantee it will work for you…

but I have the feeling that almost everyone in here does it without following all the recomendations.

Which model exactly? (I’m not aware of those firmwares.)

I ordered the LG and I’ll have it by tomorrow.
