How long should it take to burn dvd

Hi to all........i am using dvd writer sony aw-g170a with nero 7 as burning software .....the fastest writing i have ever done was in 7 minutes at 18x(that is supposed to be the writers full speed).....recently i downloaded a software called burnaware free...what was new was it was showing the actual real time burning speed....at max it took 7min40sec at average 8x speed......at 16x it took nearly 10min at avg 4x speed....i dont understand how 18x became 8x......then i went exploring through options in nero...then i checked show write speeds...at 18xspeed it took little more than 7mins...with speeds ranging between 7x to 11x......so what is wrong here...i have seen older 16x writers writing under 6.5 minutes......

My system is as follows PentiumD 3ghz,2gb 533mhz ram,160GB SATA harddisk....945chipset mother board...using sony 16xDVD-R(same results with +r too)....i am running around 27 processes....and speed didnt improve even after i disabled resident scanners..........so where have i got the problem....is it that my writer is bad....then i cant do nothing for now........if not than help me improve my burn speeds............thank you

Seems to me your burning times are fine. Usually the speeds, of let’s say 16X discs, only reach that speed at the very end of the burn. They start slow, hence the average speed is less than the top speed at the end.

If you would peruse some of the reviews you could check what other burners are doing.

Seems you are right in the ball park. Some burners will be a little faster some a little slower.

Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-R media at 18x, average writing speed of 13.14x, and a writing time of 5 minutes and 40 seconds. The result is very good.

Well i am not using taiyo medium but i dont think sony medium could be that bad to take 2 minutes more than above…

I DID the dvd speed using nero 7…it shows time 5min43sec…that reallyy sounds good but has never happened in actual burning…(and i lost a dvd testing write speed…i didnt know it would actually write something on that dvd…)…so how does it look…

like you are trying to burn too fast. if your disc are playing good in your dvd players then i wouldn’t worry about it.

i burn for quality not speed. do another Quality Test at 8x instead of Maximum. this will allow us to better compare. 8x is the forum standard.

(and i lost a dvd testing write speed…

you probably are paying premium Sony price for those disc. i would try to find some Verbatim at a local electronics store or get some Taiyo Yuden online. you will find the quality to be superior and the price almost always lower.

i dont run the burnt dvd on a dvd player…the player i have doesnt play most dvd’s(made a wrong choice long back…)…but it runs fine on my comp so it is ok…and that dvd costs me only 15 Rupees indian currency(it is like less than half dollar us)…and there is no Taiyo Yuden in india…maybe verbatim is available around …

data transfer rates from the hard drive to the dvd drive, cpu load, ram, other programs stealing resources, buffer under runs… your dvd drive re-calibrates to perform a better burn, sometimes the drive will not reach 18x or even 12x, the speed will automatically fall back to make up for buffer under runs or to adjust for better burn quality.

you could be experiencing buffer under run errors causing the speed to fall back. i see in your create disc graph the buffer went as low as 12%. dvd drive buffers are usually to small for practical purposes, so many burning programs will have virtual buffers. different programs handle this better than others.

if all you are really looking for is speed the only suggestion i have is to upgrade your firmware.

since i ran out of dvds i went and bought a few today…i didnt find any verbatim…they told no sales…they had never heard of taiyo… i ended up getting sony dvd+r…does + or - make a lot of difference…

the dvd+r took near to 9 mins to burn set at 18x speed…nero showed last 40%dvd burning close to 5x or 6x(in the test it went up to 17x)…

and as u have quoted above …that buffer going as low as 12% …is it normal or not…

that firmware update by Liggy and Dee …they are telling to use it under my own responsibility…and also to backup my original firmware…so where is my original firmware…

is it safe…

i will be try to burn at 8x and see
(try to go for quality)…depending on my time at 18x around 9 mins this might take long…if 8x really gives me good burn quality and manages to finish under 10 minutes then may be i will follow that…

but the problem is that i still dont know what the problem here is…if the drive is good and still everything doesnt go as it should then one day if i get a new drive it may still may not make much difference…
as you gave the affecting factors above…i dont know about the transfer speeds between my hdd and my dvd drive…but cpu load and ram i dont think there should be any problem…other programs in background other than system programs i am running avira,spyware terminator,teatimer and zone alarm personal firewall…and i dont know much about buffer s either…

It doesn’t matter what you set Nero to, in this case 8 to 9 minutes is the average time for an [B]8X[/B] burn. These discs are probably a bad match for your burner. Pop a blank in ImgBurn and see what speeds it shows as available.

As an example, using TYG02 -R 8X discs, in my Lite-on, ImgBurn shows:

Supported Write Speeds: 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x (takes about 8 minutes for a burn)

In my Pioneer 115D it shows:

Supported Write Speeds: 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x (about a minute less)

Note the scans with the 12x burn from the the Pioneer are excellent, a hair better than 8X in the Lite-on.

Some Opto 16X +R’s I had would only only show as 6x tops, in the Lite-on.

ok …so i downloaded imgburn…i also burnt a dvdwith it …this time i kept it at 8x…it ran at 6x for the first 20% then it went and remained steady at 8.2x…wavering a bit this side and that…wit avg burn speed of 7.5x it took 8min to burn followed by finalizing the disc(does it always finalize…doesnt it allow for multisession)…i have not tried it at 18x yet…

also supported write speed it shows upto 18x…i will try that soon and maybe it will finish like it should…

imgburn is fast but the initial work before the burn that we have to do takes much longer time…for example unless u have the entire 4.4gb in one folder u have to go to every other folder scattered around ur harddisc singly every time…

one more thing …my c drive is in fat32 format…rest of my drives are in ntsc…does that effect my burn results…
