I want to overclock my processor but just don’t know where to begin or even if it is possible. Any advice would be greatly recieved.

True, I can’t overclock my E4300 on my Dell :sad:

That’s too bad Arachne. I have my E4300 running at 2.7ghz on the stock Intel cooler. Changed one setting for that, and kept the standard voltage settings. :slight_smile: (Edit: I did change a couple of memory settings though, now that I think about it)

Lots of people have them at 3 ghz or more, with better aftermarket coolers.

You may be out of luck on overclocking. You’d just have to look through your manual, and the settings available in the bios.

Precisely why I prefer building my own…Which I need to do since it’s been a while…

Hehe, I bought this as a backup machine (the situation has changed slightly, both PCs are running). And my mum bought one as well, so no new computers needed there :wink:

My manual says nothing about overclocking, and there is no option for overclocking in bios. Can I upgrade my bios? Is it possible to install a different bios altogether?
Sorry for the probably dumb questions, but I have never done anything like this before.

Most likely you’re SoL…

No, don’t try a different bios. Some relatively insane people have hacked the bios on oem machines to get overclocking abilities, but no one with any sense will use something like that.

If you don’t have manual control in the bios, I think that is the end of it. There are some software programs that will let you overclock through them, but they are exclusive to particular manufacturers and only to certain compatible motherboards.

If you really want to try overclocking, you’ll need to build your own machine. Sorry.

And even building your own isn’t a sure-fire guarantee of overclocking success. If you choose to go that route, research your chosen motherboard thoroughly.

My last machine was a home-brew, with a P4 1.4GHz and and ECS motherboard - no overclocking possibilities there that I could find. :wink:

Ive looked at an Asus Striker Extreme motherboard. It says it is suitable for overclocker, can anyone confirm this and what processor can you recommend? Alternatively, is there a more suitable motherboard i should start out with? Again, I’m very new to all of this and I don’t mind learning the slow way - Not looking for immediate and trouble free results.

OcUK know their stuff and that looks pretty sweet. Hopefully someone can advise you on an OC’able C2D CPU to match - I have an E4300 which is said by most to be a sweet overclocker, but you might like to pick something faster :wink:
