How a DRU710A/BYX4 learns CMC MAGE01

So, I got the EPROM tool and performed an LMR and then burned a few disks one at a time, running kprobe on them after each burn. The media is a cheap "Staples" TEON packaged media which claims to be CMC MAGE01--and I have no reason not to believe that.

All pieces of media are from the same spindle. Here's the first one:

In my experience, the Teon discs are cheap, but they're pretty good, too. I recently bought 100 of them because I like 'em so much.

Kinda interesting how the learning kinda jumps over the place. I see that the 11th disc didn't have as much data on it as the 10th or 12th; I wonder how it would've looked if it was full. On my 1653S, my Teons burn perfectly after media resets (it's one of the few media types that can burn well right after a reset without first "burning in" a few discs)... I haven't really tried burning any Teons for a long stretch like that.

(the only disc types that I've burned for long stretches like that have been RICOHJPNR01 and MCC003, and their scans look pretty much identical from the very first to the very last disc)

So, some variety in how the burns turned out.

Burns 5, 6, and 17 were thrown away as having too many errors--PI
Burn 1 was pitched due to an excessive number of PIF errors

If they could all be like 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, I'd be very happy!

Oh, a bit more background info, these discs were all burnt at 4x as 6x and 8x seemed to always produce bad burns with this media--although it clearly says '8x' on the label of the media. I never did this extensive of a survey with any burn speed other than 4x, so maybe it was just learning that caused the bad 6x and 8x burns, but I'm not willing to blow away that much media to find out. I'd rather wait for a bit for the 4x burns to produce better results. Once this media is gone, I don't think I'll be intentionally buying any more.

Codeking? Code65536? Any comments or insights? I hope this little experiament proves helpful to further the understanding of how media learning works on Lite-On drives.

You tossed the first disc? I think the first disc looked just fine. There's a little spike, but from the shape of it, it was probably a speck of dust or a scratch. I guess in your case, having OP disable learning would help.

How does a burn at 8x look? These things tend to look pretty nice at @8x for me...
