i recently tried to upgrade my processor from an amd duron 850 to an athlon xp1800+, so decided to get a new cpu fan aswell (akasa ak-785se - more than capable for both processors).
however, after recieving the processor and fan, i found that my motherboard was faulty and so, couldn't run my new processor!
until i purchase a new motherboard, i am using the old duron with the new fan (as the thermal pad on the old one had melted and come apart).
the old fan was also an akasa, with what looks to be an identical heat sink, but with a smaller fan than the new one (but has no model reference on it!).
but for some strange reason, the cpu is actually getting hotter than it was with the old fan, even though it should be better!
i can't put the old one back on until i get some more thermal pads. could it be that the thermal pad on the new fan is not as good, or is there another possible cause?
p.s. is thermal compound better than thermal pads?
