Horrible DTS output after converting a mkv x264 with DTS

I did a search and found no threads regarding this issue. Therefore, I decided to start one on myself. This is for convertxtodvd ver. 2.1.14.223.
Converting a mkv x264 with ac3 is no problem. The outcome DVD result is acceptable.
Converting a mkv x264 with DTS is no good. The DTS output after running convertxtodvd ver. 2.1.14.223 is HORRIBLE!! Noisy and crappy. You cannot even stay with it.
I have tried on different mkv x264 with DTS. Same results.

Hi there,

Do you use “[X] Automatic Gain” for the volume ? (To enhance it) ?

If you do, try an other test with DTS without the Auto Volume Gain, see if it’s still an issue.

If it’s still sound very bad, contact claire @ vso-software.fr she will tell you how you can upload them one of those files, so VSO Developpers can reproduce the issue and fix it !

Isn’t DTS Audio streams just copied ?
Provide us a full conversion log, I know AC3 audio is just copied over, not trouched at all, I think this is also the case for DTS but may be wrong

Thanks for the quick response, cougar_ii.
Nope, I left audio settings as default. I will try to send a sample to claire@vso-software.fr later.

Sure, I can post the conversion log. Where can I find it on my PC?

Hi,

C:\Documents and Settings[USERNAME]\Application Data\Vso

is where you will find your logfiles.

v2.1.17 was just released today.

Try it with v2.1.17 and see if it’s still an issue !

The original mkv x264 DTS works great.
Unfortunately, the result is the same on 2.1.17.241. DTS output is very bad. Here is the new log file:

Interesting problem, as log shows that streams 1 (DTS) and 2 (AC3) are just copied over, they are not changed during conversion.

I have put a sample mkv file (18MB) at http://www.4shared.com/file/14487563/96b1a341. Please feel free to give a try.

If it is an AVI file with one DTS stream only, the output DTS result is fine. A mkv file contains DTS and other AC3 streams, the DTS result after conversion is very bad.

Here is the lastest log:

Here’s my log of the sample .MKV you provided.

All 3 x AC3 audio stream play 100% in PowerDVD.

The DCA (DTS Probably) that won’t play in PowerDVD or course !

English, and 2 other languages I have no idea what they are, but the music comes out real nice !

I do not have DTS capable equipment, so I will upload the file to VSO for analysis, so they can test the DTS stream.

Thanks Cougar_II,
You can try to use the Media Player Classic that comes with k-lite mega codec pack. It plays the original mkv with DTS and the DVD files. Of cource, you will be able to hear the DTS result after the conversion and you will agree with me for sure.

Playing DTS on computer ??
You can not verify ANYTHING that way, unless you have real DTS hardware on your system.

Thanks to cougar_ii.

Multimedia and CD&DVD Burning Software

Hi,

Humm I do use the Mega Codec Pack (PlayBack Only installation) but never play the movies in Media Player Classic :disagree:

I always use PowerDVD

I have not re-read all the posting above, the horrible audio, is it in Media Player, or after you burned it, you played it in your DVD Player, with DTS Output, and played on a sound system that accepts DTS ?

Anyway, VSO has your file, let’s see what they say

I have tried it on PowerDVD 7.2. The horrible audio is there. I did burn it on a DVD+R media. My dvp642 dvd player and my Yamaha HTR-5930 Receiver recognize it as DTS, but sound is very bad.

Yes, VSO has the sample file. Let’s see if they can fix it.

I drove myself crazy all last week with same problem. My mkv file has a DTS-ES 6.1@1536kbps. It plays just fine with VLC Player, as a mkv. I demuxed the file and each part plays just fine.

Convertx messed up the audio, just as you described. Hope this bug can be fixed.

Just noticed VSO dev put the following comments on this bug report:

the ouptut is horrible because the DTS stream bitrate is very high and incorrectly muxed.

Can any one provide another sample to cougar_ii to upload to VSO FTP? I have a feeling that VSO will treat this BUG as “a problem source file”. Let me clarify again. The Horrible DTS output only happens when the mkv file contains DTS and other AC3 audio streams. This is a BUG!! I did convert a AVI file with DTS audio and the out put DTS result is fine. Come on, bgjuliar also has found this issue. Please post the same issue that you have seen. More people complain will let VSO know THIS ISSUE NEED TO BE FIXED!!!

Pwong,

Have you tried out the version 2.1.19? Have you noticed any difference?

I did try 2.1.19 and there is no difference. Thanks for the hints, california girl. I have tried to convert another mkv file with DTS stream only. The output DTS has the same horrible DTS output issue. VSO has been doing a great job to improve convertxtodvd, but I doubt they will fix this issue unless more people report it.

Hi,

Seems that issue has been solved in ConvertXtoDVD v2.2.0 ßeta to come out pretty soon I guess.

Please contact claire (at) vso-software.fr for that ßeta release when available.

Thanks cougar_ii. That’s a great news. I cannot wait to try v2.2.0.
