I didn't see a forum for conversion to another format so I posted here. I have tried in the past to convert my dvd's to mp4 (for smaller size and easier playing over a network), but of course the conversion process takes so long, I get a few done and kind of give up. So this time I am going to actually do it (get all my dvd's, tv and other video content on hard drive on my htpc). I have been running multiple instances of nero recode to convert to mp4. I have been doing 2-3 movies at a time (so I can leave it running while I got to bed or work). With priority set to low, the computers are usually still usable with them running.
So last night, I did 4 on my athlon 64 3400 machine, and 5 on my e6300 machine. Of course they were not done by the time I woke up (only slept about 5 hours). When I got home from work, the 5 on the e6300 were done and the computer was working fine. 2 of the 4 were done on the athlon, and the computer was sluggish just a bit. I paused one and let them finish one at a time (they were almost done). After they finished, the computer was no longer sluggish.
So has anyone done this many or even more format conversions at the same time? I'm wondering how many I could get away with? Does anyone have a clue what kind of system resources are necessary for each instance of nero recode that is running?
Further computer specs.
e6300, crappy ecs board
1.5GB memory (only 2 memory slots so I would have to buy more memory to go higher).
radeon 9550 with about a 60% overclock (9600 speeds).
5 hard drives with about 640GB + 300GB network storage (very slow)
nec 3500 (samsung 18x burner installed but not hooked up cause no ide spots left, and too lasy to change stuff around to free them up right now).
I'm not sure what else matters. antec 430 watt true power.
athlon 64 3400 and abit ax8 board
1GB memory (another GB waiting for me to get around to putting it in).
7 hard drives (3 drive raid, 2 drive raid, 2 singles, about 1.4TB + 300GB network storage).
Liteon ? (16x, don't recall the exact model right now).
430 watt true power
Any thoughts on if I could do more at a time? Anyone did more at a time?
Fyi the 5 conversions on the e6300 were across the lan (read and write to hard drives on the athlon 64 machine).
