I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 that has a HLDS GSA-T11N 8X drive. I just bought some new Taiyo Yuden Premium Line printable 8X DVD-R (TYG02). I got them as they seem to have a solid reputation for Wii backups and that is my primary use.

Problem is that I can’t seem to burn a single disk. I have tried 5 and all coasters. I am using Nero 8. Here is my log from the burn…

It seems that after this error the disk is still showing as blank. If I try and burn with imgburn I get a little further then all stops. About 5% into the disk I get an error and imgburn stops.

I have searched all over the net and cannot find any solution or even other folks having this issue.

I also have a NEC ND-6650A and it is not getting any further.

I just bought 100 of these disks from meritline and have no way of telling if they are a bad batch or what.

Any suggestion or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

There are a few thing’s that you can do.
1st remove all kind of virtual cd software
2nd remove incd or what ever packet writing software you have installed
3rd try different media
4th clean the lens

That’s all i can think.

I have burned successfully with other media including memorex dvd+r. I know the drive can write DVD. I just can’t figure out why it doesn’t like this new media I bought.

I do have some virtual cd software I can try uninstalling.

I have no idea what incd or packet writing software is. Did you see traces in my logs?

For sure I have cleaned the lens.

#4

If you have burned other media, then the problem is with your current media.

#5

Well, I contacted meritline and they have agreed to take the discs back for credit. I have no way of knowing if these discs are faulty or if it’s just the 2 drives I am using don’t like them. Since I have always had good luck with DVD+R I think I will swap these DVD-R for +R. My drives claims to write to both standards but I have never burned a DVD-R that I know of. I only went with the -R as I read in forums that they were preferred for Wii backups.

#6

Maybe if you have the time and the money you can try some Verbatim, but if it works with +R media, and you are ok with this, i guess there isn’t much to add.

#7

I thought I read somewhere that verbatim is TY media. Could be totally off on that one but they are both high grade. My main concern is that they are inkjet printable (including hub) as well as good quality that will work well in the Wii. It seems the Wii can be really picky with the media it will read.

I would like to add something I forgot in my original post. There was an insert on the top of the pack of DVD I got that has written in like 8 diff languages that basically says, “Caution: New Standard 8X Speed DVD-R. This product is not suitable for use with DVD-R/RW drives which do not comply with the new DVD-R specifications for 8x writing speed.” then goes on about how it could damage your drive and to check this website for more information.

Well, from what I can see on their site this “new” standard came out in like 2003. My drive was manufactured end of 2005. I can’t find any information on this new standard mentioned anywhere. My drive specs claim to handle 8x speed for both DVD-R and +R writes so I just don’t know what to think.

Verbatim has it’s own disc usualy are MIT / MII / MIS and a few are made from TY MIJ.

I have seen that sticker in That’s media both formats and all kind of speeds.

Your drive should be able to burn TY media, but as i said you can try to burn a few different brands and see if some of the others worked out for you.

Hello,

Is it possible to make GSA-T11N region-free via a firmware update?

Thanks
