It really was an 8x burn. CDSpeed doesn’t play nice on my Windows XP x64 system and always messes up the measured speed of the drives.

Been keeping my eye open and picking up some really old media lately from various places… I thought this media would impress, but is is mediocre at best. I may attempt to re-burn this on a very old 1x SCSI drive in the future.

Not a good drive for writing old and exotic media. You really want something better, like an old Plextor or Yamaha CD-RW or Pioneer or NEC/Sony/Optiarc DVD writer. LiteON drives of that era were known for performing poorly on cyanine CD-Rs, especially low-speed varieties.

Really? I know the poor writing quality of th 12x and 24x LiteOn, but since 40x LiteOn performed better than the 40x Plextor-drives

And I guess DVD-writers don´t support older CD-Rs and write with a standard-strategy and only 16x-speed

Seeing as how I only have one more of these to test, I experimented with an old Sony CDU948S an old 1998 Mitsui Gold disc to see if it was a good candidate for the Hitachi Maxell. C1 was ok’ish, nothing to write home about, but jitter was awful.

I then burned a 1999 Mitsui Silver (i subsequently read that Gold is a gimmick and actually inferior to silver) with my Plextor 1610A and got the following results:

Can you please clarify a couple of things:

  1. Why is C1 so much higher on the BenQ?
  2. Based on these results, do you think the Plextor is a good candidate for the Hitachi?

I’ll look through some more drives I have here in the meantime.

I wouldn´t trust the Samsung. On a CD-R you will have many C1-errors, the big areas with Samsung which no C1-errors are unrealistic
