We are facing a very rude situaton in Hungary, counterfeit Verbatim DVD-R 8x discs (with faked MCC02RG20 MID and falsified package) are spreading everywhere in large volumes in our country. Only the 8x DVD-R 25pk spindle is involved. On my homepage you can find a very detailed comparative article http://www.cdgrab.hu/_cikk/hamis_verbatim/index.html about the counterfeit Verbatims (the article is Hungarian, but the pictures make it understandable). The European office of Verbatim officialy made a statement to help us to identify the fake Verbatims. Now we try to find the source, where the fake discs were manufactured. Please help me to find any other DVD-R disc on the market with this stamper ID on the inner ring: “DVD-R M-803”, may be this can help us to find the original source of this product.

Thank you in advance!

The question is not find out that these disc are fake or not. The are fake. You can find the official statement from Verbatim Europe here: http://www.cdgrab.hu/_cikk/hamis_verbatim/letter-dvd-fakes.pdf .

The MID, Media Code Block is perfectly falsified- Only from the package, the printing and of course the quality of the burned disc you can say that it is not an original Verbatim. The question is who made these discs?

#5

Can you give me any serial number that is stated on the media (clear hub) ?
the DVD-R M-803 code doesn’t match with any currently available information.
That’s why I try a different approach.

DVD identifier can only identify based on MID however.
We are working on a few things.
1 Update of the current database.

2 Disclaimer that MID is not what it used to be.
However currently got my hands quite full and the progress on 2 is going ultra slow.

3 something else.

#6

Serial numbers from the inner hub (they are very hard to read, very blurry)
DVD-R 9C-180164 U28A 03 050331 05 11 25 9447
DVD-R 10C-180142 U28A 03 05331 17 27 18 5164

Maybe Infosmart? The serials seem similar.

This is a true example of faked media. The manufacturers have tried to make their discs and package indistinguishable from legitimate Verbatim media. This is a big difference from borrowing an MCC media code for compatibility’s sake (but not trying to pass the media off as being manufactured by Mitsubishi).

#8

Agree, this is far more than simply borrowing a media code. I am sure these false Verbatims were manufactured in large quantities and they will show up in other countries too, especially in the Eastern-European region.

#9

Do you happen to know who distributes them? That would be an essential part. I wonder if the store owners that sell these discs will tell you…

#10

Unfortunately the copyright levy is very high in Hungary (0,65 Euro for each DVD), so the 80% of the DVDs are sold on the black market - because average customers dont want to pay 3x price for the same disc. The fake Verbatims mostly showed up on the unofficial channels making them untraceable to find te source.

#11

Am subscribing to this as i’m a Verbatim obsessive from over at Afterdawn and don’t want to end up buying these or inadvertantly recommend them to others…

:a

These codes doesn’t match with any codes so far.

Also no suspicious trade leads.
Hmm and with it selling not through normal channels it will be allmost impossible to track down.
(Tracking through normal channels allready sucks.)

It was reported in the Chinese forum CDBest that there are fake Verbatim 5-color (similar to the Pastel) in China. These are 8X-R with the TYG02 MID. But they don’t have the GGxxxxxx serial number. Instead, it was marked DVD-R 8X and T1017. The fakes look every bit the same as the genuine ones except the serial numbers and the quality of finish. One poster mentioned that the T1017 number is also found in some fake BenQ 8X-R with TYG02 MID. (Yes, they also have fake Ritek, fake Sony …) It’s possible that these fake Verbatims are from the same source, the number T1017
may stand for TY code and the number M803 may stand for MCC code. Just my guess.

#14

Hmm that’s interesting probally will contact verbatim soon.

#15

The DVD-R M-803 is identical looking to my TDK media which is manufactured by CMC Magnetics.

Else I can’t say I’ve any media looking like this.

#16

Doing research suggest that the theory of T =TY code
M= Mitsubishi code is not so likely.
Unlike the companny completely changed there numbering systems.

#17

I try to find out what kind of stamper and dye formula they used for these false discs. The MCC MID was falsified during the last step of manucfaturing, when the pre-writing process was done. Now I’m changing the writing strategies in two burners and I try to find which existing strategy gives the best result at 4x and 8x speeds. At least I will find a way to burn these discs properly (8x speed writing via the original MCC02RG20 strategy gives very bad results with this crap disc).

#18

I try to find out what kind of stamper and dye formula they used for these false discs.

You should say befor they used.
The MCC MID was not falsified dureing the last step.

Also even if they burn well then how long would these last. My guess is not that long.
So what’s the best use for these disc’s well I think swapping them with folks who are willing to have them in there collections as references.
I wouldn’t mind exchangeing some Taiyo Yudens for such a crap product just so that I have personall access to it and I probally know another person being that crazy.

Somthing like that ?

I have a pack of bulkpaq frosted 8x dvd-r that have the same serial ‘DVD-R M-803’ and also use the MID: MCC02RG20. The quality is absolutely horrible.
I bought them from www.svp.co.uk about a month ago
