Help solve the mystery of the log file

My Sony DVDRW D56A for some reason burns CDRs, but not DVDRs. My friend told me I should change my media brand, so I switched from Memorex to TDK DVDRs, yet… the problem still persists.

This is where in the log file the problems start happening:

Anybody have any ideas? I haven’t upgraded the firmware, but I hear that the PSD6 verison firmware is really shotty for this optical drive.

What is your current firmware version? Older D56A firmwares do not support TDK-003. PDS6 is not the newest firmware, either (PFS3 is).

I belive it’s a PDS3

Well, that’s definitely the cause of your problem, then. PDS3 is about a year old and is hopelessly out-of-date; it has no support for the TDK-003 media code. Update to PDS6. Or PFS3 (which is a bit newer). Where did you hear that PDS6 was problematic, out of curiosity? I haven’t heard about any problems with PDS6.

Some people on the Dell forums were freaking out about it, they might have installed some wrong firmware are screwed up the drive.

Thanks for the help I’ll try installing PFS3

looks around the Dell Inspiron CD/DVD forum and searches of PDS6 Didn’t find anyone complaining about it. I think PDS6 is just fine. It comes from the Dell support site, so it’s supported by Dell. The copy of PFS3 on our site came from a Sony tech support site, and is not officially supported by Dell (read: technically, the use of Sony’s PFS3 on a Dell will not be covered under warranty). Personally, I’d go with PFS3, but I’ve never cared about warranty and support. If you are worried about the technicalities of tech support, then stick with the one that Dell is sanctioning, PDS6.

I installed PFS3, and it works like a charm! Thanks code

hello!
i have SONY DW-D56A, but i have firmware from DELL PSD 7 and i have the same problem but i have another DVD’s.

I tested my driver by DVD Decoder and results is here:

i tride to change to firmware SONY (this newest) but flasher show me error.
this dvd’s is production for world mark - vobis. this disc is very cheap - in poland 0,99 PLN this is 0.2934$ or 0.2409 €. but i don’t thinkin’ that there is discs problem. maybe this is firmware, but i have newest DELL firmware for SONY burner. i will try burn on better discs (maybe TDK or sth better). but i don’t think that this is better.
