HELP! Lost My Documents

#1

Hi,

I was installing linux on an XP PC and I am not sure what happened but my HD partitions changed and I can not access all MY Documents as they are lost somewhere on the HD.

I moved this HD to be a slave and rebooted the PC with another HD.

Is there a way to retreive my files from an unpartitioned area of this HD?

Thanks

Hi and Welcome!
I was installing linux on an XP PC and I am not sure what happened but my HD partitions changed
This is normal since Linux needs its own partitions on the HDD.

and I can not access all MY Documents as they are lost somewhere on the HD.
That’s bad.

I moved this HD to be a slave and rebooted the PC with another HD.
Since any write attempt to that HDD may make things worse, connecting such a disk to a Windows system isn’t a good idea at all.

Restore them from your backup.
No backup? Then I’d suggest contacting a data recovery specialist like Ontrack or similar, if you aren’t experienced enough.

You might also create a 1:1 copy of the entire HDD (the Linux command dd is good for that, run from Knoppix or another Linux Live CD) for own experiments with the partition table.

You might have some luck with a program called File Scavenger. It restored files from messed up 2 disc array for me.
