I’ve owned the drive for about a year now with no problems to speak of until a few weeks back. The drive seems to be dying on me.
My problems are when it’s writing only. I start Nero (184.108.40.206), insert new cd, arrange files to burn, click go, and about 2 mins later, all hell breaks loose.
The drive idles (yellow light) and freezes up windows (98SE, run on 600mgh).
All of the time it happens with Nero reading:
“used read buffer†= 0% and
5% written with the “buffer level/state†at 98%.
I’ve tired this many times. Sometimes it freezes up at 2% written, sometimes at 7% written.
I get a blue screen when this happens too, but not all the time.
The thing is that as soon as I see surpass 10% written, the drive works great!? So, sometimes it burns correctly, most times I waste a cd.
What I have tried to solve the problem:
Updates firmware (currently 5S5A)
Uninstalling/Reinstalling Nero (different versions, many times)
Uninstalling/Reinstalling CD Drive (both software and physically)
Clicking dma option on/off
Defragging hard drive (Norton)
Yet to try:
One of those cd cleaner kits.
I have run CD Speed, but I get errors with that too. Sometimes the test (transfer) runs all the way through with these results:
Other times, I get a blue screen a few seconds into the test (again, freezing up cpu).
So, is my problem due to software or is it the drive itself?
Any suggestions are welcomed.
