Help! DW-Q30A (SH-1635S)

Hoping someone can help me here. Recently purchased a Sony DW-Q30A. So far I have been unable to burn any DVD+/-R DL discs. Using Nero Ultra 6 I get a “failed” error message after ~25%. I have tried disconnecting my DVD-ROM drive from the slave on the same channel but this has not helped. Would appreciate any helpful suggestions. Have updated to firmware ver. YYS6. Have also tried Liteon YSOX with exactly the same results. TIA.

It rather depends on the media you’re using. Only Verbatim +R DL media is recommended.

Understood. I have tried Verbatim -R and +R DL media as well as Memorex and Fujitsu +R DL and GQ (Fry’s) -R DL.

Might be good idea to save a log file & post it back here.

Ok. My system now hard hangs after 1% burn of layer 1. Is there a way to retrieve a log after rebooting?

Ok, here is the log:

Log attached

Several things to try.

. Update Nero to the latest V6 version
. Create an ISO image out of Nero & burn that with ImgBurn. This is the only app I’d burn DL media with.

Updating to the latest v6 helped. got about 50% of the way through before it failed this time (on Ritek disk, will try verbatim tonight). Will attempt imgburn tonight. Comment?

That wasn’t it. Tried to burn TDK DVD-R using Nero and Verbatim (Mitsubishi) DVD+R using ImgBurn from ISO and both failed!

Could this be the problem (System ASPI installation corrupted)? If so, what is the fix?

Oh crap. Using force aspi, I reverted to Adaptec’s 4.60 version of aspi which has now hosed my drive. Now when put a disk in the drive it just makes a clicking noise. Nero shows the drive as being empty and asks that I put a disk in! I’ve gone from bad to worse.

ASPI issue resolved by upgrading to Adaptec 4.7. SL and DL burns still fail.

06-04-26 info tool.txt (42.6 KB)

ASPICHK.TXT (1.04 KB)

OK, this fixed DVD-R burns for me (my drive would burn DVD+R’s fine, but didn’t recognize -R’s as writeable – more info here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=180273 ) so it may do the trick for you as well. It was complicated the first go-round but I’ve pretty much got it down to a science now, and I’ve used it on two different DW-Q30A’s with great results – very clean 16x burns on HP DVD + and -R media.

Crossflashing to the current testing firmware for LiteON SHW-1635S’s seems to sort things out. (Note: There may be a bug in this testing firmware with burning DL discs with HyperThreading enabled, so keep that in mind if it could affect you – I’ve got a bunch of Athlon64’s, so I didn’t worry about it. Check the testing thread occasionally for an update if it does affect you.)

Here is the whole process, step by step…

Step 1:
Get all this stuff.
Grab the LiteON/Sony Windows firmware tool from here:
http://upload.cdfreaks.com/ftools/LtnFW.zip
Grab the EEPROM backup tool from here:
http://codeguys.rpc1.org/utilities/EEPROM_Utility-3.3.3.rar
Grab the LiteON testing firmware version YV6J from here:
http://upload.cdfreaks.com/liteon/testfirmware/YV6JWIN.EXE
Grab FlashFix 1.1.1.12 and UPX.exe from here:
http://digi.rpc1.org/flashfix.htm
Grab this DW-Q30A flasher, just in case:
http://download.medion.de/downloads/treiber/dvdsony_dwq30a.exe
(Note: This is a self-extracting archive, not the actual flasher. Run it, then patch the result with FlashFix to get back to a “Sony” drive if the crossflash doesn’t work out and you determine the drive is defective/need to RMA it)

Step 2:
Back everything up.
Run EEPROM tool, back up your EEPROM.
Run LiteON Windows Firmware tool, backup your firmware.

Step 3:
Mod the new firmware so it’ll flash your drive
Unarchive FlashFix somewhere and put UPX.exe in the same directory.
Copy the LiteON SHW-1635S testing firmware (YV6JWIN.EXE) to the same directory.
Run FlashFix, drag YV6JWIN.EXE in to the FlashFix window, it should say “file patched.”

Step 4:
Crossflash the drive.
Close everything else, make sure there is no disc in the drive, don’t do this when the power is flickering, etc., and run the newly modified LiteON flasher, YV6JWIN.EXE. Choose the DW-Q30A (make sure it’s the right drive, cause this modded flasher will flash any drive now) in the pull-down and click update. Wait, pray if you’re in to that… it should say you need to restart.

Do so. Twice.

Step 5:
Clearing some now maybe-invalid EEPROM data.
(this is firmly in the “just to be safe” category, but I’d do it anyway)
Run EEPROM utility again, but this time click “Reset Learnt Media” and “Reset HyperTuning”.

Step 6:
That’s it.
You should now, theoretically, be golden. You might also consider trying other burning programs before chocking this all up to the drive. I hated Nero and had serious burning/stability issues with it up until mid-version-6, so I still have a sort of deep-seated mistrust. CDBurner XP Pro is freeware and gives me good results, and someone else suggested ImgBurn. Try those, and maybe a trial version of Alcohol 120% or BlindWrite Suite and see if you get better results. Nero’s “custom” ASPI layer just acts screwy on some systems.

If it still doesn’t work I’d suggest modding the Sony firmware flasher I had you download and flashing the drive with that (to return the drive designator to Sony DW-Q30A rather than LiteON SHW-1635S), then calling up Sony or wherever you got it and saying it’s defective and you want to RMA, if possible.

Hope this works for you, and if so, glad I could help.

-silent

Thanks silent. I’ve since purchased a DW1670 (Benq) which i thought to be a 1640. I gave it a shot anyway and it has actually been performing beautifully.

I still have my dw-q30a/1635s and will give your suggestion a shot.
