Help! 812S burning coasters on -R media!

I borrowed a friends 812S (flashed with US0N f/w) to burn some data, he gave me some Datawrite 8x -R media to use, and it keeps burning CRC errors on them? I haven’t got any +R media to try.

I also borrowed a friends Plextor PX-708A (f/w 1.04) to see if that did the same, and burned one test on the Datawrite -R media and one on a Datasafe -R media he gave me, and both burns were error free!

The same media that failed on the 812S burned fine on the 708A.

Both drives were Primary Slaves each time, and used Record Now Max 4.5 (PX engine 507) and Nero 6.3.1.10.

First, I burned with Record Now at 8x with the Datawrite -R media, Norton Antivirus enabled and got buffer underruns but BURN-Proof kicked in but media had CRC error when file copying data back.

Then I burned the same Datawrite -R media with Nero at 4x (ISO/UDF format), Norton Antivirus was disabled because I thought this was contributing to the buffer underrun, RAM buffer was set to 80mb in nero and it burned with no underrun (no surprise at 4x though) but still produced a disc with a CRC error when file copying data from it!

Next I tried the Plex 708A, burned with Record Now at 4x with Datasafe -R media and Norton Antvirus enabled, and it burned error free!

Then I burned a Datawrite -R disc with nero at 4x, Norton Antivirus enabled, same settings in nero that produced a bad disc before but this time burned error free!!

From my small testing, 812S = 2 failures in 2 burns, 708A = 2 success’s in 2 burns!

Does this indicate my mates 812S is faulty?

I think it depends on the media u used ?
What did you use ?

Thats just the way the 812S is… you have to use media of TY quality.

Here’s the media info from DVD Identifier 3.4 Build#2

These were identified in the PX-708A, this drive only burns -R media at 4x!

So TY (I assume that’s Taiyo Yuden) media are better suited to the 812S? What about the RITEK G04, is that OK with the 812S as I’ve read it’s the best one to use but have yet to try one in the 812S? And something I should have asked too, where is the Media Compatability List for the 812S?

Also, could there be a problem with the US0N firmware?

Also, could there be a problem with the US0N firmware?

No. US0N is the best firmware around, and for burning FUJIFILM03, it is the only 812S firmware that correctly supports it. There are 812S drives that can burn the DW-Greys without problems. However, there are also a number of 812S drives that seem to have sub-par -R abilities. I wonder how +R does on that drive? In any case, perhaps returning it and getting a better 812S may be your solution.

Methinks you may be right seeing as the US0N f/w is made for the FUJI discs! I also believe -R is not as good as +R for ‘lossless linking’ so maybe a +R disc may burn better in the 812S?

Either way, I’ll inform my mate that his drive may be suspect and tell him you suggest he get it replaced!! He’s off work with stress at the moment, so this news will make him less than happy :frowning:

He’s now RMA’d the drive via overclock.co.uk where he bought it, he’ll send it back next week. He rang their tech support up and they said it sounded like a faulty drive.

So we’ll have to wait until they’ve received and tested it to find out if they will replace it.
