I just recently recieved 3 IBM thinkpad's for educational puposes and because all three have hard drive protection, I cannot access anything on them. All I want to do is use them! Help!
Wipe 'em and use 'em.
That’s the thing I can’t do anything with them , even a write zero gets stopped because of protection!
Check out the BIOS… some business laptops have encryption and/or overlay features managed there. You might have the option to disable these features, rendering the data useless but freeing the HDDs for access.
Alternatively you can try to run a live distribution of Linux, and then wipe all discs using a tool like gparted or similar
Some examples are SystemRescueCD and GParted
