Hard drive health of a usb drive

I have tried different utilities for my internal drive which are fine. I had a WD usb drive which was making a sort of clicking noise and windows 7 asked me to check the drive, where i did the complete check of fixing sectors. There has not been any clicking but i wanted to make sure the drive is fine.

I am guessing smart can not be found over usb thus i would have to remove the drive???

Hi,

for that WD drive, you should be able to check it using WD’s Data Lifeguard software, which is available from wdc.com

You might also try smartmontools, preferably from a Linux Live CD.
